After a weekend of writing, story telling, and reading, Cairns Tropical Writers festival was regarded as a “huge success” from the hundreds of people that flooded through the doors.

The festival expanded over the entire weekend from Friday to Sunday and featured over 80 authors, 2000 school students and hundreds of residents and travellers listening to seminars, interviews, and participating in workshops.

President of Cairns Tropical Writers festival Julianne Steer said they’ve offered everything from crime to poetry and saw everyone enjoying the event.

“Both myself and the committee really do believe this was an incredible tourism opportunity,” she said.

“We have real potential to put Cairns on the map for the writing festival circuit.”

pioneer and founder of the festival Diane Finlay had tears in her eyes when she was looking around the room and explained that she never expected it to have this much potential.

“Going back to 2008 at our first festival, we found it hard to fill one room,” she said.

“Now, we have writers who have come internationally and presented in front of hundreds.

“It brings me so much joy.”

Outside the board rooms were rows of stalls as authors and writers pitched their books to the community.

Local authors Lesley Mosely and Annabell Muis carried their nonfiction piece ‘Turning Points- Regaining Joy after Loss’ around as they listened to their own inspirations speak.

“Last time we were here we presented, but today we were just soaking it in,” Ms Muis said.

“We wrote about major life trauma,” Ms Moseley said.

“Today we were able to soak up a room full of different perspectives and totally different writing styles. It was so refreshing.”
