ISOLATED, alone and frightened after contracting Covid, for elderly couple Maggie and Jim Copp the Cairns Hospital’s virtual Covid ward has been a shining beacon of reassurance.
The Smithfield couple aged 77 and 86 have expressed heartfelt thanks to the virtual Covid ward team for an invaluable service provided during their isolation period.
“I am very grateful because this virus is very frightening, especially for older people,” Mrs Copp said.
“The doctor rang us and every day, the nurses call us and tell us what we need to do.
“Every day they call me and check through our symptoms and they have sent equipment to measure the amount of oxygen in your blood and what the pulse rate is.”
Ms Copp said she and her husband had fairly minor symptoms but being physically isolated due to family members being immune compromised meant it’s been a stressful time given the number of elderly lives claimed by the pandemic.
“They have just been so empathetic and caring. It has been very, very helpful,” Mrs Copp said.
The Cairns virtual ward operates between 7am to 10pm and can be contacted by ringing 4243 4208.
