“The Last Spark first came about in 2017 and we planned it as a web series...but we got interest from overseas distributors to revamp it as a short film,” she said.

“We revamped the whole project with new scripts and ended up making it into a feature-length anthology film, we’ve finished filming and we’re currently chasing funds for post-production.

“I’m talking to distributors, the visuals are finalised, it’s just colour, sound, VFX and getting a finisher to polish over it.”

Ms Elle said while there had been a concerted push from the likes of Screen Queensland to market the Far North as a filming destination, she wanted local actors and crew members to get recognition as well.

”We have confirmation from the Academy that the film will be screened for them in October, so that gives us a deadline to get everything finished,” she said.

“Cairns is quite small in the film industry and it’s quite unheard of for a locally-produced film to be accepted into the awards.

“With other productions that come here they bring in their own crews and use us as the little guy, runners, extras, and that’s why we’re pushing so hard to get the recognition the region deserves for The Last Spark.”
