The NT’s tourism sector is performing, a new report has found, with booking numbers ramping up.
In seasons gone by, BRG considered the Territory a struggling destination due to its booking numbers until earlier this year when the company found “cause for optimism” following an upshot in booking numbers.
This week, BRG’s hope for the Territory went to another level after it released its Spring 2025 index report.
“The Northern Territory saw a 4 per cent year-on-year increase this season with bookings climbing for the first time in three consecutive seasons,” BRG presidence John Boris said.
“So it’s a major increase (and) shift in momentum.”
Of note, activity bookings in Darwin rose by 25 per cent, with BRG attributing the surge to the capital’s dining cruises hospitality scene.
Katherine and Alice Springs dipped - however BRG has put their performance to “the destination’s unique weather seasons”.
Mr Boris said he appreciated if Territorians were optimistic.
“The biggest takeaway is that it not only benefits travellers - domestic and inbound - because they’re going on these amazing experiences that Australia has to offer, but it also benefits small and medium sized businesses,” he said.
“As well as the surrounding, broader economy that support all of these experiences.”
The good news is not limited to the Territory, however, with other jurisdictions also faring well.
“There’s been a shift over the past few years of Australians exploring domestic travel, but also doing it in in their backyard,” he said.
“The cost of flights continues to increase, so Australians are finding new ways to to go to explore their own country, which is fantastic for inbound tourism. It’s critical that it continues to rise.”
