Top performing NAPLAN schools in Hunter revealed in last 5 years

Find out the top performing NAPLAN schools across the Hunter in year 5 and year 9 tests between 2017 and 2021.

Newcastle Grammar School and New Lambton Public School are the top performing NAPLAN schools in Hunter.

An independent analysis of five years of NAPLAN results has revealed the schools which consistently performed the best in the Year 5 and Year 9 tests between 2017 and 2021.

The top performing Year 9 school was Newcastle Grammar School, in The Hill, where the average yearly result was 3126.75 over the five years.

“We are thrilled with our NAPLAN results and it is a testament to our teachers and the way our students prepare for the tests,” Head of School at Newcastle Grammar Erica Thomas said.

“NAPLAN remains an important benchmarking test for parents to judge how their child is performing in key areas at that time of the year.”

Hunter Valley Grammar School in Ashtonfield was the second best for the region with an average score of 3039.75, while St Philip‘s Christian College - Waratah in Waratah was the third best with an average score of 3034.0.

Over that five-year period, New Lambton Public School had higher Year 5 yearly results than any other school in the Hunter, scoring an average of 2711.8 each year.

“The school is built on a culture of high expectations and we pride ourselves on that,” New Lambton Public School’s relieving principal Briony Scanlon said.

“It is about a constant approach to teaching and learning programs with explicit instructions and inquiry-based learning.

“The community, in particular, have helped push those high expectations and the staff have continued to have our students push themselves harder and higher.’’

Newcastle Grammar School in The Hill was the second best for the region with an average score of 2707.5, while Holy Family Primary School in Merewether Beach was the third best with an average score of 2702.0.

To determine how each school performed between 2017 and 2021, their average scores for each year were combined and the yearly average found.

Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled in either year, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects in either year were excluded from the analysis.

The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government‘s MySchool website.
