Top performing Illawarra NAPLAN schools revealed in last 5 years

Smiths Hill High School and Wollongong Public School are the top performing NAPLAN schools in the Illawarra, an independent analysis showed.

Selective high school Smith’s Hill was the best performing school between 2017 and 2022.

Two schools in the Wollongong CBD have been the most consistent performers in the Illawarra during the last five years of Year 5 and Year 9 NAPLAN tests, an independent analysis has revealed.

The analysis, which looked at results between 2017 and 2022, showed Wollongong Public School had higher Year 5 yearly results than any other school in the Illawarra, scoring an average of 2754.0 each year.

The Illawarra Grammar Schools (TIGS) in West Wollongong west is the second best for the region with an average score of 2703.0, while St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Bulli was the third best with an average score of 2647.3.

Selective high school, Smith’s Hill, was the top performing school in Year 9 with an average yearly result was 3387.75 over the five years.

The Illawarra Christian School in Cordeaux Heights was the second best for the region, with an average score of 3072.5.

TIGS also featured in this list with an average score of 3067.25.

To determine how each school performed between 2017 and 2021, their average scores for each year were combined before the yearly average was found.

Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled in either year, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects in either year were excluded from the analysis.

The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government’s MySchool website.
