The biggest NAPLAN improvers for schools across inner-city Sydney and the Eastern Suburbs have been revealed, along with some which have gone backwards.
Gardeners Road Public School in Rosebery recorded the biggest improvement for a primary school with average Year 5 NAPLAN results increasing by 14.73 per cent over the past five years.
Holy Innocents’ Catholic Primary School, in Croydon, was the second best with an increase of 11.26 per cent, followed by Coogee Boys’ Preparatory School, in Randwick, with an increase of 10.97 per cent.
Coogee Boys’ principal John Dicks said the school was pleased with, but not surprised by, the results, and cited the school’s approach to nailing the basics, but pushing students to explore and engage in their learning.
“We use a lot of technology to help students explore the world and get a greater understanding of it,” he said.
“But it’s also about not losing sight of mastering the basics, which are still important.
“It’s a blend of traditional and contemporary skill development, getting the boys engaged in their learning, and finding the topics that really motivate them – that’s what we’re all about.”
The school is one of the smallest boys’ prep schools in the state.
“It’s important for us to perform well, especially as we feed into the likes of Scots College, Cranbrook and others, so we want to hold our own at that level, too,” Mr Dicks said.
“Our educational programs are really about getting those foundations and basics nailed down, and getting them right is critical.”
Meanwhile, Marrickville High School recorded the biggest improvement for a secondary school with average year 9 NAPLAN results increasing by 3.41 per cent over the past five years.
Ashfield Boys High School was the second best with a 3.1 per cent increase, followed by Lycee Condorcet The International French School Of Sydney, in Maroubra Junction, with an increase of 2.81 per cent.
Meanwhile, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School, in Waterloo, recorded the lowest improvement for a primary school with the average Year 5 NAPLAN results returning a result of -7.16 per cent over the past five years.
Macquarie Grammar School recorded the lowest improvement for a secondary school with a result of -13.26 per cent over the past five years.
The analysis compared the five-year change in NAPLAN results from 2017 and 2021 and revealed the schools which have improved their Year 5 and Year 9 student scores the most.
It was calculated by each school‘s combined results for each NAPLAN subject in 2017 and compared with the same results in 2021.
