An independent analysis of newly-released 2022 NAPLAN results has revealed the schools which performed the best in the Year 5 and Year 9 tests.

Central Coast Grammar School, in Erina Heights, had better primary results than any other school on the Central Coast, scoring an average of 557.2 across the five test subjects.

Gosford Public School in West Gosford was the second best for the region with an average score of 541.6, while Central Coast Steiner School in Fountaindale was the third best with an average score of 537.

The top performing secondary school was Gosford High School with the average result was 663.4.

Central Coast Grammar School found itself high up on the secondary schools list as well, second best for the region with an average score of 610.6, while Central Coast Steiner School in Fountaindale was, once again, the third best with an average score of 608.8.

To determine how each school performed in 2022, the scores for all five test subjects for the student cohort (Yr 5 or Yr 9) were combined and the average found.

Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects were excluded from the analysis.

The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government’s MySchool website.

Central Coast Grammar School is not new to the top, in terms of NAPLAN results, with principal Bill Low saying “strong literacy and numeracy skills are crucial for the success of every student and a core focus”.

“Our ongoing explicit and systematic teaching of literacy and numeracy skills across the school is a key factor to the success we see in all external testing,” Mr Low told the Express Advocate.

“Students, parents/caregivers and teachers should be proud of these excellent NAPLAN results.”

Central Coast Steiner School principal Rosemary Michalowski said she wasn’t surprise by the results with the Fountaindale school delivering similar results in recent years.

“It’s great news, we are very proud,” she said.

Ms Michalowski said the school placed great importance on the “holistic picture”, with NAPLAN a “useful snapshot”.

“What we don’t do is teach to the test, it’s not our approach,” she said.

However she said the results helped show the strength of the school’s curriculum and Steiner’s 104-year approach of “engaging the whole student” and inspiring an intrinsic love of learning.

“Best of all, our students love learning and they love coming to school,” she said.

“We have happy students who are thriving.”

Coast Christian School principal Matthew Drennan pointed out that the Bensville school’s focus wasn’t on NAPLAN.

“Instead it’s on quality teaching and engaged learning. Hopefully good results are the product of a quality process,” he said.

“In relation to teaching, we focus on direct instruction when the students are young, with a strong phonics-based approach to learning how to read which underpins most other subjects.

“In relation to learning, high expectations of children’s behaviour in the classroom is one of our focuses because otherwise, too much of a teacher’s time is spent managing the students, which of course compromises their learning.”

Gosford Public School principal Stephen Reed said the school “has achieved ongoing success as a high performing school by establishing and enhancing an organisational culture underpinned by excellence, understanding, tolerance and inclusion”.

“Reflective practice, continuous self-assessment and evidence-based decision making has been embedded in the school’s culture since 2017,” he said.

“The school leadership team has provided ongoing professional learning to staff to prepare and develop a culture that embraces continuous self-assessment practice.”

Deputy principal Peter Allen said the school had established “rock solid foundations”.

“High expectations as well as consistent and equitable access to quality learning opportunities has been evident in all learning spaces,” he said.

“Teaching and learning programs across the school show evidence that they are adjusted to address individual student needs, ensuring that all students are challenged and all adjustments lead to improved learning.

“Teachers involve students and parents in planning to support learning, and share expected outcomes.”

Relieving Deputy Principal Jessica Malu added that “learning and positive outcomes flourish because we embody a culture of care and compassion and maintain a shared responsibility with all stakeholders to build strong foundations for students’ health and wellbeing, before unleashing their academic potential.

“Put simply, we Maslow before we Bloom,” she said.

“With a high proportion of Gosford Public School students coming from non-English speaking backgrounds, we strongly promote community engagement and embed effective EAL/D (English as an additional language or dialect) strategies to support all students.”
