The hard work on primary and secondary students across the north shore and Hornsby regions has paid off as new NAPLAN data shines a line on the top performing schools.
The release of 2022 NAPLAN figures has revealed a mix of private and public schools have achieved an increase in results from the previous NAPLAN test in 2021.
The data shows the primary schools which recorded the highest average scores in the region across the fields of reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy were Abbotsleigh, Artarmon Public School and St Ives North Public School.
Abbotsleigh also recorded the fourth average highest primary school result for any school across NSW.
North Sydney Boys High School recorded the highest NAPLAN result for high schools in the region followed by North Sydney Girls High School, Hornsby High School, Normanhurst Boys High School and Abbotsleigh.
Abbotsleigh principal Megan Krimmer said great learning outcomes and growth are achieved when students are engaged and motivated.
“For this to occur, we believe that teaching should be explicit and responsive to student needs,” she said.
“Equally, the classroom should be a fun and accepting learning environment where making mistakes and constantly refining understanding are routine practices for all.
“At Abbotsleigh, our focus is not on NAPLAN and we do not ‘teach to the test’.
“We know that as our girls are supported to build strong literacy and numeracy skills, they will transfer this learning to a range of situations including standardised tests.
“We continue to analyse our NAPLAN results to correlate the outcomes to key
learning areas and existing assessment tasks, identify priority areas and refine our programs
and assessments accordingly.”
Pymble Ladies’ College principal Kate Hadwen said the school had a development program and a dedicated research centre for academic staff to continue to upskill and share their action research findings for the benefit of students.
“Prior to the 2022 NAPLAN testing period, this led to the introduction of intensives to further develop students’ ability to plan writing tasks for English, additional English skills tasks embedded into assessments and an increased focus on Working Mathematically skills,” she said.
“Developing excellent foundational skills has always been an essential component of education at Pymble.
“For all the traditional measures, such as NAPLAN, we have well established programs and outstanding teachers that focus on amplifying the literacy and numeracy capacity of students across all year groups and subjects. In 2021, we also began implementation of our ‘Watch Us Change the World’ strategy to build students’ academic, emotional, social and digital intelligence.”
The national tests are designed to measure students in literacy and numeracy and track progress.
