An elderly man has died after being struck by a car, bringing the death toll on Victorian roads to 10 in 48 hours.
The 66-year-old pedestrian was hit by a car on Geelong St, West Footscray at about 8.20am on Monday.
He was rushed to hospital with critical injuries, but died later on Monday afternoon.
Police have confirmed a 76-year-old Seddon man, the driver of the vehicle, stopped at the scene and is now assisting with enquiries.
Geelong St was closed for most of the day, with drivers warned to expect delays and avoid the area.
It comes as two separate fatal collisions took place in different parts of the state on Monday - just as police launched National Road Safety Week.
Two people were also killed when their vehicle collided with another car on Midland Highway in Eganstown just before noon.
The driver of the other vehicle was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries.
The incidents were the state’s ninth and tenth deaths on the roads in 48 hours.
“We are incredibly frustrated that in National Road Safety Week - which kicked off yesterday - we’ve seen really, really tragic and unacceptable levels of trauma,” Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said, as per 9 News.
“We have got significant enforcement operations under way, we have a real focus today on speed …yet we still see people taking completely unacceptable risks and causing collisions where they just should not occur.
“People just don’t get it.”
The predominant cause of road trauma across the state was a “single act of non-compliance”, Acting Commissioner Weir told reporters.
“Something as simple as rolling through or not stopping at a stop or give way sign, being distracted, or speeding,” he added.
“I just don’t know what else we can do to appeal to people to please take care.”
Anyone who witnessed the collision, has CCTV or dashcam footage or has any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
