Brushing teeth won’t be a time-consuming daily task now that a company has unveiled a product which claims to do the job in just 10 seconds.
French company FasTeesH has unveiled the Y-Brush at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas which it says cleans all teeth simultaneously.
Instead of using a small toothbrush head, the Y-Brush features a silicone tray lined with nylon bristles positioned at a 45-degree angles, which cleans half a person’s mouth at a time.

After filling the tray with regular toothpaste, consumers place it around a row of teeth like they would with a normal mouthguard.
Once the power button is turned on, FasTeesH recommends you make a chewing motion while it’s in your mouth in order to fully clean your teeth.
“Our mouth is made up of 32 teeth with three visible angles for a total of 96 overall faces to be cleaned. If the recommended brushing time is two minutes minimum, then it means that each surface of the tooth should be brushed for 1.25 second at least for a total of 3.75 seconds per tooth,” FasTeesH said.
“With Y-Brush each of your teeth are brushed for five seconds since all the teeth are brushed simultaneously, that is four times more than with a traditional manual or electric toothbrush during a brushing of two minutes.”
As not all mouths are the same size, Y-Brush comes in four different sizes, including a smaller version for children.
The Y-Brush was one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns of 2018. It only needed to raise $US25,000 ($A34,862.50) but ended up receiving more than $US180,000 ($251,010) to bring the product to market.
The Y-Brush is now taking pre-orders for $US125 ($A174.31), and it includes a charging station, a storage pod, and an applicator for the toothpaste. It’s expected to start shipping on April 2019, including to Australia.
The company recommends replacing the mouthpiece every six months.
You would be warranted however to be a little sceptical about the claims of the company as it is yet to receive the seal of approval from the American Dental Association. It also doesn’t eliminate the need to floss.
