Woman claims she was racially abused by a family on Australian street in ‘dehumanising’ incident

A young woman claims she and her mother were stopped on the street and “surrounded” during a walk. The abuse that followed was “dehumanising”.

A young woman has described her “dehumanising” experience of being racially abused on a Queensland street.

Jasmine Diviney took to TikTok earlier this week to recount the moment she and her mother were allegedly mocked and bullied by a “white family” during a walk.

The 21-year-old said they were walking home from dinner when they were “surrounded” by the group, who she claims made fun of their language.

Australian-born Jasmine is of Indian heritage and knows four languages, and said she will often converse with her mother in her native tongue.

“I’m tired of Australia” she started the video, which was hash-tagged with both Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

“I’m honestly done with how racist this place is. My mother and I were simply walking home from a night out, a nice evening that we spent together.

“We were talking in our native language, and this white family – a woman, her husband, and their two daughters – come up behind us, and surround us.

“This woman starts to mock our language. Then they proceeded to laugh, and they could see from our faces we were not having it.

“It’s like we were’t even people, like we were’t even real people with human feelings and emotions.”

Jasmine went on to say that the interaction was extremely hurtful and that she was “done” with living in Australia.

“That hurt me so badly. My mum was like, ‘This is how it is Jasmine, if you’re living in their country,’” she said.

“And I said no, I was born here, this is my country. I’m not going to let people talk to me that way.

“She was trying to be nice to them so that they would go away. I’m done, I can’t stay here if this is how it’s going to be.

“I don’t like being made to feel less than. And I will do what I can to fight that.”

She went on to recall how the two children with the parents were “laughing along” with their parents’ racist actions.

“If you think it’s okay to mock someone’s language because it’s different to yours, that’s f***ed up.

“You’re teaching your kids that … mentality. Those two little girls were laughing so much, they must have been 14 and 12.

“Anyone who raises their kids with that mindset should not be allowed to have kids. It’s disgusting.

“We’re living in 2022 and we still think it’s okay to harass people on the street because of the language they choose to speak with one another.”

Jasmine added that this abuse sent her “over the edge”, as she claims to have dealt with “microaggressions”daily.

“This is straight up disrespect. I can’t do it.

“I think it happens to the brown community a lot. It’s not okay.”

The video was inundated with comments from supportive TikTok users who were shocked at Jasmine’s story.

“English isn’t even the native language, Australia isn’t a white country, we need to respect everyone” someone commented.

“As a British-born Indian man, I am so sorry,” another said.

“Australia terrifies me for this reason, it almost seems like the 1950s.”

In a follow-up video, Jasmine addressed the Indigenous community of Australia.

“The fact that they [the white family] will stand on Aboriginal land, and mock somebody else, for speaking a different language than them, is beyond me,” she said.

“How much do you want to bet that they don’t even acknowledge Indigenous Australians and the traditional land?

“They live in their little racist bubble.”
