If you're after a light and refreshing holiday, rather than one that leaves you an emotional wreck for a week, apparently you might like to switch Ibiza for Kotor.
With Europe summer almost upon us, and a new generation of travellers looking for some less hectic kinds of fun, there are few things we need to accept.
Aside from skinny jeans now marking you out as an aging millennial (or English), these bitter truths include: Gen Z preferring vaping to drinking, airlines not giving a flying float carbutetor about your flight credits, and Ibiza (maybe, just maybe) not being the clubbing centre of the universe.
Speaking of which, if you're one of these elderly folk born between 1981 and 1996, and you're now after a gentle mojito of a holiday (rather than a biblical, double rum cola of a holiday) TikTok has the perfect solution for you: Kotor, Montenegro.
Not that you can't go wild there, but apparently it is a more 'wholesome' kind of fun (the lake also gives it Queenstown, New Zealand kind of vibes). That's my reading of videos like TikTok user @boundtoherbackpack's, anyaway.
According to @boundtoherpackpack, if you're planning your European backpacking trip, you should add Kotor, Montenegro to your list, stay at the Old Town hostel, go to the sunset BBQ that the hostel organises, don't miss the boat trip on the lake and have some wholesome and memorable nights out.
In the comments section, followers shared some of their own fond backpacking memories of Kotor, too, from "getting destroyed by bedbugs" to the "soooo good" times they had.
@boundtoherbackpack isn't the only one raving about Kotor, with @sightsofsara calling it "highly underrated" and one of the most beautiful cities she has ever visited. Her video shows off the Blue Caves and Fortress Hike - more wholesome activities to add to your Kotor bucket list.
Tripping Millennial, for her part, called it the most surprising place she has visited in Europe, talking about how close Montenegro is to Dubrovnik, Croatia and saying "if you're already in Croatia it's super easy to access as a side trip or a day trip." She also said she found it safe, cheap, stunning and uncrowded.
There you have it. If you want to trade Ibiza's thousand yard stare for Kotor's restorative, Siesta-like properties, this could be just the sign you need...
