The very Aussie fact that even locals are surprised to learn

It may look like rain, but the truth is far more disgusting.

Why you should rethink walking under trees this summer

Aussies know far too well that there are lots of things to worry about when it comes to our native wildlife.

First of all, we’ve got spiders - the little ones, not the big ones - then the snakes, and also those feisty kangaroos that are ready to punch on at any given moment.

But, people have just discovered a brand new threat that’s less terrifying than it is disgusting.

“Of all the wildlife they warn you about in Australia…”

Laura and Maya, two women travelling Australia from the UK, posted on TikTok to share their unusual find.

“Of all the wildlife they warn you about in Australia, never did I think I would have to worry about getting pissed on by cicadas,” they said.

In the video, captioned, ‘last summer we were swarmed with flies, this year we’re dodging golden showers??’, you can see spurts of water coming from the trees - and it’s not rain.

“THEY DO THAT???????”

Unbeknownst to them, the discovery of cicada wee was just as surprising for Aussies, with many saying they’d never heard of the act before.

“wait cicadas piss? I don't like that I now know this,” one commenter said.

“…I was wondering why the trees were dripping water after no rain… kinda wish I didn’t know now,” said another.

“THEY DO THAT???????” a third asked.

“As an Australian you have absolutely bamboozled me!” said another.

“every day i walk under the trees before a nature reserve. I thought it was neighbours sprinklers travelling in the wind. 😕” another person said.

But, as unbelievable as it sounds, it’s definitely real - cicadas produce jets of pee called ‘cicada rain’, and with over 300 species found all over Australia, it’s likely that more people have been hit with it than you might think.

Could they get any more annoying??

Others are well aware

As much as this was news to us, it seems some people were well aware of the cicada rain phenomenon, sharing their own embarrassing and disgusting stories.

“Went camping a lot as a kid and we just got used to it falling into our cups and plates of food 😐” one person said.

“First time I ever ate sushi as a kid cicadas peed on it and I refused to eat it again for like 6 years smh ruined my meal,” said another.

“The worst feeling when you’re out hiking and feel a drop of rain only to realise that it’s a sunny clear day and it was in fact bug piss,” a third said.

“It’s so bad! My son was trying to get some photos for his year 6 farewell and we were all getting hammered by their droplets 😭” another commenter shared.
