The infuriating airport habit people are officially sick of

"Why stand right in front of me?!"

Plane etiquette tips all frequent flyers need to know

When you’re taking a flight, you know you’re going to come across all kinds of annoying people.

You’ve got the people who line up at the gate as soon as it’s called (seriously, what’s the rush?), the people who stand up the second the flight has landed even if the doors haven’t opened yet, and, and the people who hold up the line at security emptying their pockets as slowly as possible.

But one Melbourne local has taken to Reddit with their biggest gripe, and it’s caused all kinds of controversy.

“Rude AF!”

A Melbourne local has posted on Reddit after a frustrating experience at baggage claim.

“I returned to Melbourne last night on an international full flight, and the lack of self-awareness from some people was astounding,” the poster began.

“Despite the clear signs instructing passengers to stay behind the yellow line at baggage collection, many ignored them, standing right in front of it.”

“As someone who is on the shorter side, I already struggle to see over a 6ft grown man. After taking this photo, two more people stood directly in front of me. At that point, I firmly said in a loud voice, ‘Stand behind the yellow line; it’s there for a reason’. Thankfully, they moved.”

“Seriously, what is wrong with people? There’s plenty of space around—why stand right in front of me? Rude AF!”

“This is exactly what irked me”

Commenters on the post shared the same frustrations over the habit, calling those who do it selfish and bad mannered.

“I don't understand why people crowd the carousel like this. Everyone could stand back and relax from 3+ metres away,” said one commenter.

“But no. One person stands right in front of the carousel because God forbid their luggage goes 1 minute without them grabbing it. Then they're blocking the view so more people crowd it. Then before you know it half the people can't see and the rest are practically ON the carousel.”

“When I was coming home from my holiday a couple weeks ago, this is exactly what irked me. I couldn’t see shit which made me cross the line too. This was a bit of a cultural shock after coming from Japan where everyone stayed behind the yellow line,” another agreed.

“People that think they’re more important than everyone else,” said a third.

“Those two are probably the first to stand up and get their carry on bags out of the overhead compartments as soon as the wheels touch down,” another person said.

“Call in the special forces!”

However, others said it simply wasn’t that big of a deal.

“I just say 'excuse me' and reach between people to grab my bag. Most people get out of your way,” said one commenter.

“Christ, call in the special forces for this,” another joked.

“Ah, flights are tough, just try and stay zen. People standing there is hard to control and nearly inevitable, but getting annoyed by them is fully within your power,” a third agreed.

“On the scale of ‘annoying things that happen whilst travelling’, this has to be the lowest on my list. Also the carousel area is pretty big, just go where there are fewer people and move on with life, I say,” said another.

Just stand back!

For those annoyed by this, one commenter shared a few simple pieces of advice.

“I was collecting bags in carousel number 1 (international arrival). I noticed most people congregate where the bags drop into the carousel. I waited on the other side with less people and didn't have much issue getting my bags,” they said.

“Also helps to put an airtag/tracker in your bag. I set me phone to track, and it would give me a notification when it was close. Didn't have to watch the carousel like a hawk and can relax in the back away from the crowd.”

But, if you’re one of the people standing up close, we have one simple message - just stand back!
