As Aussies face the winter chill, a heated debate has erupted in a popular ALDI Facebook group after a mum shared her indoor clothes-drying solution.

The woman posted about the hack to the ALDI Fans Australia group, declaring the budget retailer's $12.99 retractable clothesline "one of the best buys from ALDI ever!"

The indoor clothes-drying hack

"When you live in a coastal town with constant rain, you have no choice," she explained alongside a photo of the clothesline.

It's the type you'd typically see strung across backyards across Australia, but she has installed it in her living room, bolted to a wall and stretched several metres to the opposite wall.

Adding another layer to the setup (and perhaps cause for concern), she has a crackling fireplace just feet away from hanging clothes, including flannelette shirts.

"Not a good idea"

While the product is advertised for indoor and outdoor use, her execution sparked a mixed reaction among group members.

"This looks so problematic to me," commented one user. "Not only are the clothes very close to the open fire, but they'll also likely smell like smoke afterwards. Sure, it's clever, but I'd be more inclined to mount it under a patio or something in the backyard than in the living room."

Another chimed in with health concerns, saying, "It's actually not a good idea to dry clothes indoors."

"It can cause mould," explained a third. "Better to just do outside and wait it out."

However, not everyone was fazed by the mum's approach.

"Been using them for years," shared one woman. "Got one going across the back room of my house and another in my caravan that we use when camping."

Others said it was "the only way to dry clothes" when living in an apartment. "I have been doing it for almost two years now as we're not allowed to use the balconies," one revealed.

Another indoor drying tip

It's not the first time a post about drying clothes indoors has gone viral.

One woman, determined to find a way around using her dryer, came up with a DIY solution for when it's raining and she can't dry clothes outside.

TikToker Ann Russell's tip was to hang clothes indoors out of the wild weather with a cold fan blowing in its direction. A normal fan is cheaper than one that heats up the room, and definitely cheaper than having the tumble dryer on for multiple loads too.

"A fan. Not a fan heater. It blows cold air. It doesn’t cost a great deal of money," she explained with images of her set-up at home.

And if you're concerned about the impact on your health from leaving wet clothes inside, Ann had a tip for that too.

"Leave your windows cracked so the warm moist air that rises will go out and you are good to go. It works really well."
