The quick and easy hack
A caravanning couple on TikTok as @diyadventurenz has taken to the app to share their ultimate hack to keep bugs away at night.
“Just trying this trick out with some yellow insulation tape, to see if we can turn these white lights to amber and repel the bugs,” the man, named Luke, said in the video.
In the comments, Luke clarified that his awning came with white lights attached - the worst colour for attracting insects.
As a solution, he cut up strips of yellow insulation tape and stuck them directly onto the white camping lights - anywhere from lanterns to string lights and caravan exterior lights.
The colour attracts bugs significantly less than the bright white alternative, keeping them away from you and your campsite.
And the best part is, you can get yellow insulation tape or electrical tape for as little as $2.58 from Bunnings - what a bargain!
“After putting that tape up, there seems to be a lot less bugs around, and it’s actually really nice to sit under,” he said.

“What a great idea!”
Commenters on the post were floored by the hack, saying they couldn’t believe their eyes at the results, and couldn’t wait to try it for themselves this holidays.
“this is just a version of 'duct tape fixes everything' and im so impressed 🤣” one commenter said.
“What? No way!!!!” said another.
“What a great idea. Also easier on the eyes, white/blue lights always hurt my eyes,” a third said.
“That’s a great idea. We have the same problem too.” said another.
Is there any other way?
If you don’t have the time to coat all your lights in yellow tape, or you’re just looking for an alternative solution, other commenters certainly came to the party.
“it is awful for the eyes, but red light does not attract bugs,” one commenter said.
“they make camping leds where you can change the colour,” another suggested.
“it does work but also add a white light 5m from camp to keep the bugs over there,” said another.
