A popular cafe chain has announced some of its Australian stores will go cashless in a major change.
Gloria Jean’s will trial card-only trade next week.
“We are going cashless. As of the 11th of September we will be accepting EFT only. We appreciate your understanding and continued support,” a sign outside one of the stores states.
It’s understood the safety of team members was one of the deciding factors for the cashless trial.
Two corporate outlets have already implemented the change, with the goal to extend cashless trade to the six company-owned stores.
A spokesperson for Gloria Jean’s owner Retail Food Group said the move was a result of customer preferences shifting.
“We believe that going cashless will not only create a safer environment for our staff but also streamline operations, allowing us to serve our customers more efficiently,” the spokesperson told 9News.
“The vast majority of Gloria Jean’s outlets are owned and operated by our valued franchise partners who set their own policies regarding cash handling.”
The company first opened in Chicago, Illinois in the US in 1979.
Jean Kvetko opened the very first store; however, the company has since expanded to operate stores across 33 countries.
The first Australian store opened in Sydney in 1996.
