Plenty of people like to get their daily exercise in nice and early before they get their day under way. And that’s fine. Unless, of course, you’re Brendan ‘Jonesy’ Jones.
For him, before work is also before most of us are even awake.
“I have 4am starts every day to be on air with Amanda Keller at 6am, so I’m straight out of bed and out the door,” says early-riser Jonesy, who co-hosts the Jonesy & Amanda breakfast show every weekday morning on Sydney’s 101.7 WSFM.
The benefit of an early start, though, is an early finish. And that’s just fine by Jonesy. An avid motorcyclist and stand-up paddleboard (SUP) enthusiast, he makes sure that a ride and a visit to the water is always part of his daily routine.
“I ride my motorcycle to work every day and find it a great head-clearer before three intense hours on air,” he says.
“After work in the afternoon I’ll then head down to the surf on my SUP, or on the flat water if there’s no surf.
“Going for a paddle every day is great exercise. I sound a bit obsessed with SUPs – I’ve got nine of them! I tell my wife I’ve got the same amount of boards as motorbikes, but I actually only have five bikes. OK, maybe I am obsessed.”
Jones says he also does weight training several times a week and uses resistance bands every night before bed. The quick-witted host admits he has a busy mind and says motorbike riding is his way of practising mindfulness.
“Amanda Keller likes to say it’s like a ‘hive of bees’, so I’ve learned to slow my thoughts, Matrix-style,” he says.
“Riding my motorbike gives me a lot of clarity … For safety you have to be paying complete attention to what you’re doing, and there’s no time to be distracted by a busy mind.”

His five favourite foods
“Tuna, porridge, steak, bananas and tomato – not together. I try to keep away from bread – the whiter the bread, the closer to dead.”
Sleep
“Doing breakfast radio for close to 20 years, it’s important to have an afternoon sleep. In addition to sleeping well at night, I have that extra nap every afternoon, no matter what.”
Exercises he wishes he didn’t waste time on
“Crunches. Useless.”
Most important life lesson he’s learned
“There’s no point sweating the small stuff.”
Best advice he’s ever been given
“It’s easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission. Not sure where I heard it, but it’s always stuck.”
Link between exercise and your mental state
“Years ago, I went from working as a labourer on a building site to working in radio. The problem was, when I moved into radio which is very sedentary, my diet didn’t change and my weight ballooned to 120kg. So these days, I include exercise every day. It combats the mental fatigue this job can give you and it keeps the weight off.”
