Powerball jackpots to $150 million: What you need to know

Powerball has rocketed to a Division One prize never before seen in Australian lottery history, after the draw saw eight lucky Aussies win big in Division Two.

The Tricks and Hacks to Winning the Lottery

The winning numbers for Australia’s second biggest lottery prize have been revealed but no one won the top prize, meaning Powerball has rocketed to a historic $150 million.

Tonight’s Powerball Draw 1217 for $100 million has been climbing for weeks with Australians rushing to grab last minute tickets to be in with a chance to win.

The winning numbers are: 27, 28, 10, 20, 11, 30, 31, with a Powerball of 2.

While no Aussies are holding Division One tickets last night, The Lott confirmed Powerball will jackpot to $150 million for Draw 1218 next week.

That’s a prize never seen before in Australian lottery history.

While no entries claimed the ‘big one’, eight lucky Aussies did win big on Division Two worth $173,767.85, three of them are from NSW/ACT.

These winners were just one number shy of taking home the multimillion-dollar prize.

159 people won Division 3 prizes of $5,342.95 and 3229 people won Division 4 ($478.35).

“Never before has there been such a strong sequence of high Powerball jackpots like the one we’ve witnessed during the past 12 months,” The Lott spokesperson Bronwyn Spencer said.

“If one single entry takes home the entire $150 million jackpot next week, needless to say, it would be the biggest Australian lottery prize ever won by a single entry,” she said.

“This would surpass the previous record by a mind-blowing $43 million.

“The current record for the biggest individual lottery win is held by a Sydney woman, who won more than $107 million in Powerball in January this year.”

Earlier today The Lott said that ticket sales peaked at 1.15pm when 3000 tickets were sold in store and online in 60 seconds.

They said the key is not to buy every ticket — just get the right ticket. But how do you know?

Lotto experts say there are a number of ways to determine if you’re closer to a win.

REGISTER ONLINE TO PLAY

This can be the difference between getting a phone call straight from The Lott — or being one of many mystery winners whose prize money sits unclaimed.

The Lott spokeswoman Ally Ramsamy said players should also register their entries to a player card.

“Make sure you charge your phone, turn your ringer up loud and keep it close by, because we’re sure this is a phone call you’re going to want to answer,” she said.

THE POPULAR NUMBERS

First of all, every number has an equal chance of being drawn in a lottery.

But, in the past 16 months some numbers have appeared more often than others.

From the main barrel, where seven winning numbers are drawn from 1 to 35 the most frequently drawn numbers are 17, 2, 11, while the least frequently drawn numbers are 12 and 26.

From the Powerball barrel, where one Powerball number is drawn from 1 to 20, the most frequently drawn numbers are 3 and 19, while the least frequently drawn number is 1 (which hasn’t made a single appearance).

WINNING ENTRY TYPES

Of the eight Powerball division one winners so far this year, there was an even split between those who won by marking their entry with their special numbers and those who won with a QuickPick entry, where the lottery terminal randomly chose the numbers.

A quarter of the winning entries were Powerhit entries, a special kind of entry unique to Powerball that guarantees the all-important Powerball number that you need to win division one.

POWERBALL WINNING STATES

There have been eight Powerball division one winners so far this year who have taken home more than $316 million.

New South Wales and Victoria have both had three division one wins, while South Australia has had two.

The other states and territories have yet to score a Powerball division one prize, but perhaps tonight’s the night.
