A young woman allegedly pretended to help an elderly blind man withdraw cash from an ATM before fleeing with his money.

A woman has been charged with allegedly stealing from an elderly blind man who was trying to get cash out at an ATM.

The 72-year-old was lining up to use the machine at a shopping centre in Mt Druitt in western Sydney about 1.30pm on Sunday, March 19, when the incident unfolded.

While waiting for staff assistance, police allege a woman approached him and offered to help withdraw his funds.

He accepted her help, but as the transaction went through, the woman allegedly withdrew a larger amount than requested.

NSW Police allege she then ran off with the cash.

After releasing CCTV images with a description of the woman, a 24-year-old handed herself in at the Mt Druitt Police Station on Friday afternoon.

She has now been charged with steal from person and given conditional bail to appear before Mt Druitt Local Court on May 17.
