‘You’re choking me: Video of baby and sibling vaping goes viral

The clip showing a baby puffing on a pink vape while the child’s sibling can be heard in the background complaining about the vapour has been called “child abuse”.

'Abuse': Baby puffs on vape before coughing fit

A viral video of a baby appearing to vape is being slammed online as child abuse.

The clip shows a young child who is reportedly two years old, sitting in a car seat, clutching a pink vape in its hand.

“Nanny,” the baby calls out before bringing the vape to its mouth, sucking on the end and blowing out a cloud of vape.

“You’re choking me with the vape,” another child can be heard saying before they begin coughing.

The post has been circulating on X, formerly known as Twitter, but the original footage is said to have come from a leaked Whatsapp chat.

Viewers of the video were shocked.

“That’s child abuse,” one person commented.

“Wow that’s one of the most shocking things I have ever seen,” said another.

“That’s ABSOLUTELY reprehensible if not criminal of these horrible parents,” a third person commented.

Plenty of literature exists about the danger to children from second-hand smoke and vapour, which is what a smoker breathes out, or what streams from the end of a lit cigarette.

“Both second-hand smoke and second-hand vapour contain harmful chemicals that children can breathe in,” reads an article on Raising Children.

“Children most commonly breathe in second-hand smoke of vapour when their parents, family and family friends smoke or vape.”

There’s another way for smokers and vapers to pass on the chemicals to children: third-hand smoke and vapour.

Third-hand smoke and vapour refers to the residue that settles on surfaces including skin, hair, clothing furniture and car seats. “This means children are exposed to harmful chemicals even after adults have finished smoking or vaping.”

The risks from second-hand, third-hand, and in the case of the baby, first-hand smoke and vapour are serious.

“Children exposed to vaping and smoking are more likely than other children to develop a range of lung and other health problems, including:

  • asthma
  • bronchiolitis
  • bronchitis
  • childhood cancers, including leukaemia
  • croup
  • ear infections
  • pneumonia
  • tonsilitis”
