The accident

The mum took to Reddit to share the incident, “Three days ago, my mother accidentally dropped my eight-month-old daughter on her head in front of me.

“At the time it happened, I thought dropping a baby on their head from a distance was one of the worst things that could happen to a baby and that she would not be okay,” she added.

“I know now, though, that babies are resilient and “bounce”.

“At the time, I was in immediate shock and feel traumatised from the whole event, I keep having flashbacks of her falling. She was inconsolable, pale, spacey, and she vomited, we went in an ambulance and went to hospital.”

She informed the forum that while the baby was discharged four hours later, she can’t help but feel worried, “ I feel like I have lost a lot of trust in other people caring for my baby, especially her grandmother. How will i gain this trust back, time?

“I don’t blame my mum, she has a lot of guilt for accidentally hurting her granddaughter and making me and my husband so distressed.”

The internet weighs in

The post, which has amassed close to 100 comments, was filled with a mixed bag of responses.

“Unless your mother is a baby dropping maniac she's probably now the person least likely to ever drop a baby. I can't imagine how bad she feels,” shared one commenter.

“I think babies getting dropped is far more common than people like to admit” comforted another.

“You have to accept that there always the possibility of your baby getting dropped. You could drop your baby, too.

“You have no obligation to let other people hold your baby. It's always a leap of faith to let others take care of a newborn,” advised another.

Red flags when it comes to baby falls

Are you clued into what red flags to look out for if your baby has a fall?

According to paramedic and first aid course provider duo How To Save A Life have shared the items you need to keep an eye out for if your little one falls.

They shared on their social media that if your child falls a height two times their own height or shows any of the following symptoms to call an ambulance:

  • More than one vomit
  • Memory loss/confusion (in an older child)
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Drowsiness
  • Change in behaviour/level or interaction
  • Seizure activity

It’s common for little ones to bump their head when they are learning a new skill like rolling, crawling, pulling up to stand and walking, it’s important to keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary.
