How to make DIY glow-in-the-dark Halloween umbrellas

This craft project is sure to have your spidey senses tingling. 🕸☂

How to make a Halloween umbrella

I might get sick of the candy, but I’ll never be sick of the Halloween experience of making costumes and little Halloween crafts.

Kicking off Halloween prep I’m starting with this DIY cocktail umbrella project that’ll have your spidey sense tingling.

We’re making glowing, cobweb cocktail umbrellas (that’s a mouthful). If your family is planning on having a séance, or a nasty little soiree with a select number of families this Halloween, these umbrellas are both spooky and sweet, and absolutely on theme.

A perk of this project, it’ll keep the big kids and the little kids busy, and (gasp) actually working together (scream team goals).

The big kids do the sharp and hot stuff, while the littlies handle the folding and painting. Let’s get spooking!

Note

Adult participation is advised when using sharp tools (E.g. art knife) and hot elements (E.g oven and hot glue gun).

Activity

Draw and cut

Draw a paper circle with a 12 cm diameter, using a large yoghurt container as a template. Cut out the circle.

Intersecting lines to a pie

Fold intersecting lines on the paper circle. Fold intersecting lines again, diagonally, to create an eight-piece pie.

Cut off one of the pie pieces, 2 mm in from the fold lines.

Drawing pebbles and cutting webs

Draw pebble shapes inside of a pie piece. Ensure there’s a gap between the pebbles and where the fold lines are. Fold the drawn pebble piece over another pie piece. Cut along the pebble lines cutting into the two layers of paper. Continue this process until each pie piece is cut out.

Glue and glue again

Glue the cut pie sides together, closing the gap. Apply a glob of glue inside the umbrella apex. Push a toothpick into the glue, completing the umbrella.

Cobweb glow up

Lacquer the top of the umbrella with glow-in-the-dark glue.
