Online shopper calls for AusPost refunds for common frustration

"Mate, it's a joke!"

Christmas parcel theft alert: Don't let thieves steal your holiday cheer!

Every Aussie has experienced the dreaded text saying your package has been sent to the post office, even though you’ve been home the whole time to collect it.

Sure, the post office probably isn’t far, but it’s still bloody annoying.

One person has taken to Reddit with their concern, and is demanding more from AusPost - but not everyone agrees.

“The bad ones make me so mad”

An Aussie Reddit user has taken to the platform after another poor delivery from AusPost was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

“AusPost needs to start providing partial refunds for postage when their drivers don't attempt delivery,” the post said.

“I just witnessed yet another driver stop for a few seconds outside my house and drive off. I had the door open knowing a package was coming and not wanting to miss it because I don't have my car today.”

The poster then stressed just how important it is for packages to be delivered correctly, and on time.

“There are so many reasons why a person may be relying on delivery and can’t just pop out to their local post office when delivery drivers can’t be bothered,” they said.

“Don’t get me wrong we’ve had some good ones and they’re worth their weight in gold but the bad ones make me so mad.

“Also please for the love of anything learn to shut a f*cking gate! It’s not hard.”

“It’s a joke!”

Others flooded to the comments to agree with the poster, saying that they, too, have had an important delivery go straight to the post office for no apparent reason, time and time again.

“Mate it’s a joke, I ordered medication on express delivery, took 7 days to arrive, they text me a delivery window of 2 hours and I make sure to be home for those two hours with no distractions so I can answer the doorbell. ‘Your package is awaiting collection at XXX LPO’,” said one commenter.

“I have lived in my unit for 4 years and up until recently, I knew if it were going Australia Post, I was walking to the post office to pick it up, Thankfully it's only 2 blocks away so not too much of an impost but annoying none the less,” another agreed.

“Yup, I had a package that was overdue and checked the tracking link on the retailers email. It said delivery had been attempted but nobody was home so would be held at the LPO for 7 days and then returned to sender (in Canada). I was on the 5th day,” said a third.

“They never left a card and my partner works from home in a front-room office and was present at the time they claimed they attempted delivery. It's one thing to BS about delivery but not even leaving a card is a new low.”

“More like a full refund!”

It’s for this reason that a number of commenters agreed that something needed to be done.

“I agree, without a monetary cost to AusPost when their service they charge for isn’t delivered then they have no motivation to do anything about this,” said one commenter.

“Absolutely agree these should be discounted if they aren't providing the service,” said another.

“I'd say more like a full refund. At the end of the day, we're paying for a service that takes a package to our door. If that wasn't even attempted, then the service wasn't provided, we should get a refund,” a third person stated.

“If I ordered a pizza and they left it at the end of the street and told me to go get it, then the service wasn't provided and I wouldn't pay for it.”

“I’m so thankful our postie is so good!”

However, others shared stories about their incredible posties, saying it’s more of an issue with individual drivers rather than the company as a whole.

“Every time I see these posts I get really grateful that all the posties who deliver here make the effort to drive down the long driveway to the last units and deliver everything right to our doors (including upstairs). Packages rarely need a signature now but even then, they try,” one person said.

“I’m so thankful our postie is so good. We give her chocolates at Christmas because she literally always brings things to the door, I’ve only had to go to the post office once when something needed a signature and I wasn’t home,” another said.

“If the parcel doesn't fit in the letterbox, my postie walks the packages up the driveway and up some stairs and drops them off at my door,” a third commented.

"Australia Post takes pride in delivering for the community"

In a statement to Kidspot, Australia Post clarified their requirements for delivery drivers, and encouraged anyone with a concern to reach out to them directly.

"Australia Post takes pride in delivering for the community and has strict protocols in place for delivery drivers, requiring them to knock three times and wait 30 seconds and take a photo of the front door or intercom," an Australia Post spokesperson said.

"We encourage anyone with a delivery concern to submit it online at helpandsupport.auspost.com.au/s/delivery-issue or call 13 POST (13 7678)."
