Landlord’s epic clapback at real estate agent after price rise request

Not all heroes wear capes. Some just know that the rental crisis is real.

As well as the insane cost of living and the inability to find eggs at the supermarket, the housing rental crisis remains one of the biggest issues Australians are dealing with.

Recent data has shown that families on an average income have been priced out of a third of postcodes in five capital cities, with Perth now overtaking Sydney as the least affordable place to rent.

But that hasn't stopped those in the real estate industry from hustling for more out of Aussie residents - whether buying or renting.

In fact, one agent has been slammed online for a shameless request from one of their landlords that has since gone viral.

Real Estate Agent's request for price rise

A screenshot of the conversation between the Brisbane real estate agent and her client is being circulated on Reddit, leaving many completely gobsmacked by the complete disregard for struggling families.

Addressing the email to landlords Steve and Donna, the note reads:

"Hoping to have a chat in the coming days about the possibility of increasing the rent on your property when the lease comes around again soon, once the current tenants have given notice to depart due to change in work location of Darren (FIFO).

"Prefer to do this on the phone, however we propose increasing and listing rent from current $550 pw to $720-$780 pw in line with other rentals in Bracken Ridge and surrounds with comparable amenities to your property."

The email is signed off with an offer to chat further in person.

Landlord's epic clapback

While the agent thought they had their best interests in mind, the landlord made it very clear that they did NOT want to "chat further in person". In fact, they were rather offended by her ignorance of the current rental crisis.

"Not happy with the idea at all. Thee is a crisis and you and your mob should know better than anyone," Steve wrote back, insisting he didn't even need to speak to his partner to agree on the decision.

"There is no need to raise the rent by $200 or more when people are struggling enough as it is. We are not in it for the money unlike the office you sit in, to line your bosses pockets at the expense of struggling families."

The landlord ended their reply confirming that they will be keeping the rent as is at $550 and hoped that by having the rent "too cheap" would perhaps "give a struggling family a much-deserved break."

The rental crisis is real

Comments flooded the original post, with many applauding the landlord for standing their ground, and for also highlighting that not all landlords are greedy.

"As a landlord, the peace of mind in having a good tenant was way more important than a few bucks, not to mention I slept easier at night," one person commented.

Another chimed in with: "Just goes to show its not solely landlords to blame for increases. Real estate agencies need to be burnt to the ground."
