When Jimmy the poodle ran away from home the rascally nine-year-old wasn’t in the doghouse … he was in the bakery scoffing corned beef.
Former Adelaide City councillor Anne Moran’s pet pooch escaped from her North Adelaide mansion at Mills Tce during the stormy weather in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
At the time she and her husband Patrick Moran thought Jimmy had found shelter in a shed, but their fur baby, freaked out by the storm, had somehow got out of their property and made a run for it – all the way to Bakery on O’Connell.
Spooked by the storm, Jimmy is believed to have sought refuge in the bakery because he saw the lights on in the 24-hour business.
Employee Lauren Kuerschner, 21, said the poodle ran in at 5am.
“He was so frightened and shaking,” she said, adding: “We put him out the back and gave him water and calmed him down. He’s such a cute little dog.”
Because Jimmy was wearing a collar with a disc engraved with his owner’s phone number, it wasn’t long before he was reunited with his family.
“When Pat picked him up the staff were feeding him corned beef and cuddling him,” Ms Moran said, adding she was “very grateful” for their act of kindness.
Should Jimmy decide to leave home again he will be in for a much longer run to his favourite bakery; the Morans recently sold their 1880-built North Adelaide bluestone mansion and are moving to Gilles St in the CBD.
