'Is this normal?': Mum mocked for innocent question about ALDI bread

Among the many face-palm emojis, some kind souls enlightened the mum.

A mum has taken to an ALDI Facebook group to ask a genuine question about a loaf of bread she bought at the budget retailer, which she thought might have mould on it.

“Bought this today and got home and noticed it has white on it,” she wrote in the ALDI Mums community.

She then shared a photo of the Wild Rise Light Rye Sourdough loaf with a light dusting of a mysterious white substance.

“Is this normal flour or mould?” she asked the group.

Mould or flour?

The comment section quickly filled up with a mix of helpful responses and of course, a few eye rolls (this is Facebook we're talking about!)

Some members of the group reassured her that the white stuff was just flour dusted on top of the sourdough, which is common with artisanal bread.

“Sourdough usually has flour on it - looks normal to me,” said one group member.

Another wrote: “Yep, this is 1000% normal. It is baker's flour.”

“It’s flour, although I would always do a sniff test to be sure,” someone else suggested.

“I get why you would think this,” another noted, “because some bread moulds do start off as white.”

Others light-heartedly poked fun at the question, with one joking: “Look, knowing ALDI, it might just be mould. But people are so paranoid these days.”

“HAHAHA 🤦‍♀️,” someone else bluntly wrote.

A baker weighs in

To clear up any confusion, Kidspot spoke to a baker, Oliver, who told us that, “Sourdough isn’t actually dusted with flour, however what you see here is likely residual flour from the bannetons or proofing baskets.”

“You dust the baskets that the bread proofs in so the dough doesn’t get stuck,” he said.

“Also, a great thing about sourdough is that it’s way more resistant to mould than other breads because of the acids it produces that give it that sour taste.

“You’d have to keep it in a humid place or in a plastic bag for a long period for it to grow mould.”
