A popular influencer has set the record straight after her young children were accused of “running wild” at a cafe and “destroying a public area”.
Indy Clinton, from Sydney’s northern beaches, garnered negative attention from fans after she shared the “chaos” of getting a morning coffee when you have three kids all under the age of 5.
But the 27-year-old influencer, who is famed for keeping it real with her more than 2 million followers, said the backlash she’s received highlights how mothers are treated poorly within society – not that her children are out of control.
“We all have those days, our kids are all chaotic, messy, feral and fussy at times, and who cares? It’s normal. If they weren’t I would be more concerned,” she told news.com.au.
“I love showing my real life stuff because that’s all I have to show. I’m not pretending, I’m not sugar coating. This is it.
“A morning starting at 5am with all the kids out of the house by 8am, attending swimming lessons, then into a park play and lastly (because a mum puts herself last always) a coffee, for my sanity, and bribery with babycinos and croissants.”
The image that has riled up some shows Navy, four, Bambi, two, and Soul, 14 months, spilling their food and drinks as the family sat outside the cafe.
“The mess everywhere,” Clinton captioned one snap. “Unreal. It’s never chill.”
There was also a video showing little Soul sipping on her milky beverage, before trying to take her big brother’s drink that was also caught up in criticism.
“Seriously please tell me it’s not normal to let your kids destroy a cafe / public area. I have three kids, I’m not strict and they are not chill but they never destroy anything, tip food over etc,” one remarked on Reddit.
“Definitely not normal, unfortunately its seen so often now. I’m a hospo worker and the amount of people who let their kids run rampant around a cafe is awful,” another agreed.
Some even went as far as to label Clinton a “bad mum” – an argument she poignantly notes she can “never win”.
“Easily I could defend myself and tell my audience, my kids cleaned up after themselves. I could get footage from the cafe of the four of us using napkins and water jugs to clean away the milk on the ground. But for what? Prove myself to who?” she said.
“Everybody wants to see you struggling, they love it. They want to see your mental health deteriorating and your marriage breaking up. They want to see you crying online.
“You know what’s crazy, my videos where I’m at most vulnerable and seem ‘struggling’ perform the best. How f**ked is that?”
Clinton is not the first mother to talk about the unrealistic standards set on women when they have children, with many labelling the burden “impossible” and “sexist”.
“Mums are too afraid of the judgement, from other mums, and for me sadly, forums and social commentary,” the TikTok Creator of the Year 2023 winner said.
“Society is more interested in shaming a mother than lending a hand.
“Motherhood doesn’t come with a book, you are thrown into this wave and you just have to ride it.”
Clinton also urged people to think twice before casting judgement, stating that while she has become used to public opinion after 12 years working as a model and a social media influencer, it can take a toll on her mental health.
“Being a mother is like being in a maze. It’s like being told the maze ends, but never finding the exit,” she said.
“You’re running through it, with a timer set whilst fire balls are being thrown at you and you have to duck to avoid being set alight.
“Meanwhile you have jazz music playing in your head and a list of all the things you need to get done when you finally find the exit.
“But you never find the exit of the maze, you just keep running. You survive. That’s motherhood.”
