I'm a die-hard fan. Here are my thoughts on the new Wicked: For Good trailer

Let's be real, the second half of the Wicked musical doesn't hold a candle to the first. But, based off of this trailer, the second film just might.

Wicked For Good Trailer

Wicked is a cult-classic musical with millions of fans from all over the world - myself included.

However, it’s no secret that the first part is what most people really come for. Pre-intermission, you’ll get the iconic bangers Popular, What Is This Feeling? and Defying Gravity, along with some of the musical’s most notable scenes - meaning it’s no surprise when you see casual theatre-goers getting up when it’s over, thinking that’s the end.

The second part, whilst also being incredible, is notoriously filled with plot holes and pacing issues.

So, as you can probably imagine, getting the trailer for Wicked: For Good was pretty exciting.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Where are the characters now?

The Wicked: For Good trailer officially premiered today following some more exclusive screenings of the first film in the US.

For those who aren’t familiar (without spoilers), the second part of the musical - and the movie - picks back up where the first leaves off, after Elphaba and Glinda have embraced their new identities as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good respectively.

The story is told concurrently with what we know happens in The Wizard of Oz, as Dorothy Gale makes her way down the yellow brick road with her new friends to meet the ‘wonderful wizard’ - who we now know is not so wonderful after all.

The trailer also fills us in on where we’ll find a few more of the characters, as Fiyero is now leading a squadron to find Elphaba as Captain of the Wizard's Guard - though his motives are very clearly… unclear.

We also got a few more sneak peeks of some new characters, including the Cowardly Lion, when he, Dorothy, Scarecrow, and Tin Man meet the Wizard, and the world around them, which differs greatly from what we saw in the first movie - somehow darker and brighter at the same time.

The music!

In the trailer, we did hear a few more snippets of some iconic Wicked tunes.

Most notably, we got a few seconds of Ariana Grande’s rendition of For Good as Glinda and some of Elphaba’s No Good Deed, of course sung by Cynthia Erivo.

However, there is also plenty more to look forward to, including As Long as You're Mine, sung by Elphaba and Fiyero, and Thank Goodness, by Glinda, Madame Morrible and the citizens of Oz.

In their absence, the dialogue, however, is what really has people crushed.

“I've had so many friends, but only one that mattered,” said Glinda to Elphaba, and I’m already crying.

What we still don’t know…

Two of the biggest things fans have been waiting for are yet to be seen in this trailer.

First of all, who is playing the one and only Dorothy.

The trailer did give us a few more shots of our Dorothy, so she already has a larger role in the movie than she does in the musical, where she is no more than a voice and a shadow. But, just who is behind the character has remained a mystery.

Fans have speculated that Alisha Weir, known for her role in Matilda: The Musical, has been cast. However, Director Jon Chu assured that whoever it is, she won’t be taking away from our two leads.

“We’re delicate. We’re delicate. We’re delicate,” he assured Vanity Fair.

It’s also been reported that two new songs - not in the original musical - will be added to part two. One for Elphaba, one for Glinda, and both to flesh out the characters in a way we haven’t seen before.

These songs also weren’t featured in the trailer, and no one is willing to give anything away just yet.

So, I guess I’ll just sit in the cinema until November (and petition for Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo's Oscar wins in the meantime).
