‘I tried ghd’s new wave styler to try to get the perfect beachy waves’

The latest in my quest for mermaid hair

If you've tried everything to achieve the perfect lived-in cool girl beach waves, ghd's new Wave styler could be just what you need.

I will opt for a head of messy beachy waves over a sleek blowout any day, and believe me when I say I’ve tried every technique to perfect the style.

After putting up with a sore arm from holding up a heavy barrel waver, crispy lengths, and frizz when using other waver models, I’d given up on the appliance. I have instead relied on sleeping with wet braided hair that I prayed would deliver beachy, somewhat presentable loose waves in the morning (they rarely have).

I love my trusty ghd straightener, and will use it to add some body to my naturally straight hair when I have the time, but I have long hair and little patience, so lately I’ve been more of a brush and walk out the door kind of girl.

But my straightener does always deliver the smoothest light waves without a single catch or pull, so I felt like I had to try the brand’s newly launched triple waver when I saw it, especially as Winter’s fast approaching and I really don’t want to go to bed with wet braids.

Having tried other iterations of a barrel waver, I didn’t have high hopes for the tool, and had really just convinced myself that my hair type wasn’t a match for the styler – so I didn’t dedicate much time or effort to my first use of the ghd Wave.

And I didn’t need to. The sleek black ceramic wave wand looked and felt professional-quality before I’d even taken it out of the box to see how well it worked.

Easy to use

The first thing I noticed is how light this model is compared to those I’d tried in the past. I could easily get through styling my whole head before I needed to give my arm a rest, which is a big plus in my book.

It’s also worth mentioning that the styler turns itself off if it isn’t used for an hour, so I didn’t stress when I rushed to my dinner reservation without my usual triple check of the power outlet.

When I did have to put it down, the built-in safety stand eased my fears of burning something on my table, as I have sadly done before.

The barrels also heated up unbelievably fast, which I should have expected, having used the brand’s other fast-heating tools.

Quick styling

The barrels are big enough and heat up fast, so I could quickly style my hair without needing to work on the tiniest sections imaginable.

The Wave’s consistent temperature of 185 degrees transformed my straight hair into loose, beachy waves in under 10 minutes (and that’s including the time taken to talk to my housemate when I got distracted between sections).

I have never had waves so soft and full without feeling like I’d just applied way too much heat to my hair.

I also couldn’t see a single indent from the clamp, which is unheard of for me.

It may have been the pre and post-style spritz of the Curls Gone Wild texturising spray that gave my hair some heat protection and grit, but the waves held on all night.

Lasting waves

I was sceptical about how well the waves would hold because in my experience, if they are perfect immediately after styling, they’re going to drop to a barely-there kink as soon as I get outside.

The spray also differed from virtually every other texturising product I’ve ever picked up in the hopes of relaxing some fresh-out-the-salon looking waves, in that it didn’t leave my hair crunchy and sticky. My waves remained soft, but way more relaxed and loose.

Needless to say, my styling routine just got so much quicker.
