American comedian and host of the 81st Golden Globes Jo Koy, has responded to the intense backlash over his award show monologue.

The stand-up comedian coped a wave of negative reactions online to his “disaster” hosting performance, particularly on a joke made about Taylor Swift.

Swift, who was nominated for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement awards, is dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

“As you know, we came on after a football double-header,” Koy said.

“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL. On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear.”

The stand-up comedian said he “had fun” but felt flat after receiving hate online and poor feedback in the Beverly Hilton.

“It was a moment that I’ll always remember,” he told ABC.’ s GMA3.

“It’s a tough room and it was a hard job, I’m not going to lie.

“I’d be lying if it (criticism) doesn’t hurt. Hosting is a tough gig and yes I am a stand-up comic but that hosting position is a different style, it’s not the same style.”

The 52 -year-old said he had just 10 days to prepare his speech for the annual film and television ceremony and when asked about Swift’s response to his comments, Koy said he felt “bad”.

“I feel bad but hey I gotta stay that I still loved what I did,” he said.

“I think the Taylor one was just a little flat. It was a weird joke, I guess, but it was more on the NFL and I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn’t have to do that.

“It was more of a jab towards the NFL but it just didn’t come out that way.”

The last- minute pick for the hosting gig also made jokes relating to Saltburn star Barry Keoghan’s “penis”, Ozempic, the three- hour duration of Openheim and he said Barbie was “based on a plastic doll with big boobs.”

“It was cool the opportunity came to me. Hosting is just a beast,” a deflated looking Koy said.

“I literally got the call and haven’t slept since.

“I wanted to give a little bit more of me and I just felt I fell a little short and that’s all.”

Koy also said he was pleased to see the “Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television” category included in the proceedings for the first time, an award taken home by Ricky Gervais.

“I think it’s so cool that the category is finally recognised,” he said.

“It’s the toughest job in show-business and it’s a hard gig.

The actor concluded by saying he never intended to upset anyone during his speech.

“I love you guys. It’s never my intention,” he said.
