How you can still do your hair and get your nails done while in lockdown

How do you keep up with your hair, skin and beauty maintenance while salons are shut? Sydney’s top beauty experts tell how they’ve been able to look after their clients during lockdown.

DIY beauty treatments in lockdown

It’s the lockdown dilemma impacting households across the city. How to keep up with the hair, skin and beauty maintenance while salons are shut?

Some may say it’s frivolous, but a person’s appearance can dramatically impact their mood and that’s why business owners are offering clever solutions to help their clients do beauty treatments at home.

Last lockdown popular celebrity hair salons Edwards and Co started mailing out DIY hair kits to their clients, which provides professional tint to cover regrowth and grey hair. This lockdown they’ve proven even more popular, with the salon sending up to 40 kits a day to clients. Then owner Remington Meyer offers face-time consults to help them apply the colour.

“Root tint is pretty straightforward and the only thing that’s really safe to do at home without a professional,” Meyer said.

“It’s not perfect, but it will keep you looking good for zoom.”

“It also offers our clients a chance to catch up with and have a chat like we in a salon. Because that’s what I miss the most.”

Anthony Nader from Surry Hill’s RAW is also offering similar kits to his clients.

“We actually didn’t plan to offer our RAW Colour Kits this time around as we thought lockdown was going to be a much shorter period. But we started to get emails asking for them,” Nader said.

Meanwhile many beauty salons are sending out DIY kits stocked with professional quality product to help clients do anything from removing false nails to tinting their own eyebrows. Hayley Wilkinson, owner of The Salon Est. in Coogee, said it’s her way of making sure their clients don’t simply pull off their acrylic nails or strong polishes.

“Many people are due for their refills or polishes and it’s very hard to remove them without professional product,” she said.

“The kits help us keep in touch with our clients and helps people feel a bit better about themselves.”

At home beauty treatments have become increasingly popular this lockdown.

Double Bay skin care clinic is also offering one hour virtual skin consultations for clients.

Owner Carina Gross said the main concerns from clients have been how to maintain dewy skin at home as well as clearing up any acne.

“Our thorough skin consultations are imperative for us to take the time to map out a customised treatment program and a tailored skin prescription by utilising high-performance equipment complemented with result driven skincare,” she said.
