The reason three recent high school graduates were killed and another seriously injured in a Tesla Cybertruck crash has been revealed by a new report.

The tragic accident, which occurred at 3am on November 27, in the small city of Piedmont, California, was attributed to drugs, alcohol, and speeding, according to authorities.

The Piedmont Police Department identified the driver as Soren Dixon, aged 19, while the deceased passengers were his friends Jack Nelson, 20, and Krysta Tsukahara, 19.

Jordan Miller, aged 20, was pulled alive from the vehicle and suffered serious burns but survived after undergoing multiple surgeries.

Reports from CBS state that the California Highway Patrol (CHP) determined the crash was due to “a combination of driving under the influence of drugs and excessive speed”.

All three had alcohol and cocaine in their systems when they died, having been on their way home from a party near their homes.

According to the toxicology reports, Mr Dixon had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.195% — more than double the legal limit for drivers of legal drinking age — when the Tesla truck crashed and caught fire.

He also tested positive for methamphetamine.

In the hours leading up to the crash, Mr Dixon “consumed approximately eight alcoholic beverages ranging from beer and vodka,” the report states.

The college students were long-time friends who graduated from Piedmont High School in 2023 and had returned home for thanksgiving from their universities across the country.

They all came from affluent families, with their homes valued at several million dollars each, according to The Daily Mail.

The group had left the gathering and made their way to Mr Dixon’s house to pick up the Cybertruck.

They were en route to Mr Miller’s house when the crash occurred.

The CHP report showed that Mr Dixon entered an intersection where the road curved and failed to adjust his speed.

The driver then reportedly veered off the road, struck a raised curb, drove onto the footpath, and subsequently crashed into a tree before crashing into a wall.

The autopsy report revealed that the three friends died from asphyxia caused by smoke inhalation inside the car, with burns also being a “significant” factor.

Their deaths were ruled accidental.

A friend driving separately, just a few minutes behind the group in the Cybertruck, spotted the crashed vehicle and used a tree branch to smash the right passenger window and rescue Miller.

The Daily Mail reports that the woman, Ms Tsukahara, was mere seconds from escaping the crash.

The witness who rescued Mr Miller claimed that he tried to pull Ms Tsukahara through the same window while she scrambled from the back seat, but was unable to get her out.

“I went back to the broken window and yelled for them to try and get out this window. Krysta tried to come up, sticking her head out from the back,” he told police.

“I grabbed her arm to try and pull her towards me, but she retreated because of the fire.”

The police officers at the crash scene were unable to put out the flames until firefighters arrived.

The electric vehicle’s large lithium-ion battery is not believed to have caught fire after the collision, with the fire chief saying that the incident was “more along the lines of a typical car fire”.

It is unknown whether the vehicle’s self-driving features were in use at the time of the crash.
