Inside Christian Wilkins’ eccentric inner city life

Christian Wilkins has left TV star dad Richard Wilkins’ home behind and is embracing life, and partying, in his new, super cool inner city pad.

Christian Wilkins is not opposed to a little drama.

He loves a bold dance move, a strong colour, a dramatic accessory and he’s all about a party. But interestingly, Christian, who can best be described as an actor slash influencer, has some relatively old-school rules when it comes to hosting in one’s own home.

According to Christian, who recently moved out of TV star dad Richard Wilkins’ pad and into his own inner-city abode, a stellar host needs to have three things and three things only: an abundance of charm, the ability to make everyone feel wanted and also, cocktails.

“Never feel your home need be magazine perfect before you have those you love over to visit.”

“It’s really important to ensure everyone feels included,” says Christian, 26.

“And if you can see someone is not then get them a martini.”

That’s Christian’s other secret party starter. A classic cocktail bar.

By setting up a bar and taking on the role of cocktail creator, Christian has something to focus on, which eases his own nerves (he’s secretly an introvert and can be quite shy), and gives him the opportunity to have one-on-one time with all of his guests – the undisputed power move of the 2022 host with the most.

“Despite all the evidence to the contrary, I am an introvert parading as an extrovert so the bar is perfect for me,” he says.

“I am literally hiding in plain sight.”

CHRISTIAN WILKINS SHARES HIS TOP HOUSE PARTY TIPS

A cocktail bar is, or ought to be, a socialite’s secret weapon says Christian, an ambassador for Grey Goose Limited Edition Night Vision Vodka.

It gives the party and its guests a focus point and the host an opportunity to shine.

“I know literally four jokes,” he says with a laugh. “And I just stand by the bar and repeat them all night long. Everyone goes away thinking I’m hilarious. It’s perfect.”

An excellent host will also need to consider decor, he adds.

“Only entertain when you genuinely wish to.”

Lighting is paramount, says Christian, who favours soft lighting or candlelight for atmosphere. Table and floor lamps are perfect or even a good dimmer on the ceiling lights, he suggests. And he loves a string of fairy lights.

“Even the cheapest fairy lights make everything look beautiful,” he says.

Next up, layout.

The best parties will have easy-access alcoves where guests can meet and mingle. Think cosy corner spaces with a place to rest a drink or seating for two, perhaps three.

“You want places where people can pair off and chat,” explains Christian.

“Set up areas where that will happen naturally.”

You’ll need appropriate party music of course and guests must follow the rule on this which is to never ever complain.

“Never be the person who turns a song off or complains,” says Christian.

“Nobody likes that person. Let it play out.”

Christian’s final entertaining tips?

Only do it when you genuinely wish to. And never feel your home need be magazine perfect before you have those you love over to visit.

“This is my first home and it’s not ‘done’ by any means,” he says.

“I painted the living room pink, it’s my favourite colour and I won’t hear otherwise, but I am still waiting to buy all of the perfect furniture pieces. I’d rather sleep on a mattress on the floor than not have what I absolutely love.”

“I feel safe and accepted and I am so grateful for my community.”

And what he loves is the eccentricity of his new home, a brightly-coloured terrace house peppered with antiques and collectibles that speak to Christian’s heart. He’s also delighted to be in cosmopolitan Surry Hills, in the heart of Sydney and a part of a colourful and kind group of folk.

“I moved from the leafy north shore which was so peaceful and quiet to a main road in the city,” he says.

“It’s noisy even at 2am and I can never sleep but I love it. I feel safe and accepted and I am so grateful for my community.”
