How the renovating gender divide is changing

Traditionally when you’re building or renovating there’s a bit of a gender divide that sets in, but all that is changing. Here’s how:

Things are changing in the interior design world.
Things are changing in the interior design world.

Often when you’re building or renovating, there’s a bit of a gender divide that sets in, with the blokes taking on the “hard” aspects of construction while the ladies take care of the “softer” concerns of choosing surfaces, finishes and furniture.

The idea is that men are just not that interested in interior design, with a general approach of ‘whatever she wants is fine’ taking hold.

But I’ve noticed in recent years that the lines are blurring, with more men getting involved in how their homes look — and feel.

For some, it’s because there’s no one else to do it. With more of us staying single for longer — or becoming single again — one-person households are becoming more common. And while the uni-student look is passable in your 20s, living in a house that looks like it has been furnished with roadside pick-ups is a bit sad as you get older.

The smarter gents are cutting their losses and calling in expert advice. In the same way that they would hire a mechanic to fix their car or a plumber to fix the loo, they’re recognising that creating a stylish and welcoming space requires a qualified professional with a trained eye.

And, from what I’ve seen, it really pays off. The spaces are masculine but warm, thanks to softer textures such as faux fur throws and chunky sisal rugs, so that anyone would feel at home. At the same time, there’s nothing delicate about them, with the focus on easy care fabrics teamed with surfaces and furniture that offer flexibility and comfort.

In short, they’re spaces that anyone would feel comfortable in, minus the grungy furniture and mismatched colours. Indeed, for the single guys, a stylish pad could be your best advertisement — and money well spent.
