Hairdresser reveals home hairstyle hacks to get through Covid lockdown

After eight weeks of lockdown, people are at their split ends. Find out a hairdresser’s top tips to keep your hair from going wild.

After spending eight weeks in lockdown, people across the state are at their split ends with bad hair days, turning to home-cut hairdos as the new form of self-care and family fun.

Bravely taking to your own hair with a pair of clippers started off as a novelty at the beginning of the pandemic and has now developed into an essential service within the home, bringing families together to style each other’s Covid coiffure.

Families living with children, couples and singles have shared their haircutting experiences on social media with some people getting truly adventurous using bright colour dyes, shaping up frisky fringes or rocking a smoothly shaven scalp.

Professional hairdressers have weighed in on the new trend with some key tips on how to shape your new hairdo.

Anthony Nader, of Sydney’s RAW Salon, who has been named Australia’s top hairdresser, is selling at home kits to customers but has some general advice for those cutting their own hair.

“Like humans, fringes were not built for isolation,” he said.

“They need love, care, a steady hand, and a well-trained eye to maintain just the right amount of eyelash-dusting length and fullness. Firstly, never ever trim your fringe wet because, when your strands dry they will jump right up. The easiest way is either to let it dry naturally and then start your mission with natural texture, or blow it out with your brush to how you wear your fringe every day, so you know how it’s going to sit. You will notice the outline of your current fringe shape. Try not to get overconfident and create a new technical shape. Stick to what your hair stylist has already drawn in, so to speak.”

Specifically regarding colour, Nader said it can be tricky, particularly for blondes.

“Don’t tackle the bucket of bleach, you’ll only end up going yellow or orange,” he said.

“It is not worth the hours, nor the dollars, when your hairdresser has to recorrect your crown of glory. Take this down time for showing your hair some extra love by pampering with a weekly scrub and masque. This ritual is wonderful for your scalp and hair strands to breathe easy again.”

He also said for those picking up home hair dye kits to not be afraid to contact the help line contact number on the box for extra advice.

“Just remember though before you take the leap playing ‘hairdresser’ at home, is it worth the outcome?” he questioned. “I suggest taking action that helps freshen up colour while we wait this out.”
