Sydney Eat Street: Best restaurants for takeaway during lockdown

Sydney is back in lockdown but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy meals from your favourite venues. Sydney Eat Street has put together a list of food businesses still open for takeaway business.

Which major retailers are open during Sydney's lockdown?

Just like Doc and Marty, it’s Back to the Future we go, given Greater Sydney is back in lockdown in a bid to stop the spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19. But that won’t stop you from sweetening the government’s stay-at-home orders.

Take a tour of Sydney’s best eateries right here with The Sunday Telegraph’s Eat Street. Are you hungry for more inspiration? Follow us on Instagram or Twitter. #SydneyEatStreet

NUTIE

The danger of another lockdown is those centimetres you sliced off your waistline from the last one will find their way back on quickly.

Dessert is often the villain, but with a vast array of delicious gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan sweets, Nutie Donuts might just be your lockdown hero. At the very least, with a selection to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters, Nutie will help keep your household happier and a touch healthier.

The proof is in the (Black Forest vegan) pudding, as well as the Rocky Road (dark Belgian chocolate, vegan marshmallows, nuts, and cranberries), chocolate fudge cake, vegan s’mores brownies, and seasonal trifle.

There are savoury options, too, such as a winter omelette (with kale, smoky eggplant, and truffle mayo) and @beyondmeat German Curry Wurst. They’re all the brainchild of Nutie’s co-owner and founder, Sina Klug.

Tired of bland and boring gluten-free options, she set about making doughnuts that would be considered a true treat — tasty with a bit of whimsy, such as her original royal blue “Cookie Monster” — a “cookies and cream” doughnut decorated like the little monster himself.

What started off in 2016 as a market stall with a range of artisanal gluten-free doughnuts has now grown to include vegetarian and vegan options across two outlets.

Both the dessert-centric shop in Balmain and lunch/brunch cafe in Surry Hills are open for takeaway, but Nutie has also extended its services (and selection) for the lockdown period, delivering to most Sydney Metropolitan areas with a minimum $30 order.

Order by 3pm for next-day delivery. (Visit nutie.com.au for delivery fees and locations.)

CRAFTZERO

Arts and crafts are good distractions during lockdown, especially when those crafts are of the beer variety.

While that may conjure up images of trendy pubs with chalkboard menus and a dozen shiny taps behind the bar, these full-strength beers have paved the way for more and more breweries to apply the same fine-tuned process to create alcohol-free options that offer the same taste but without the potential hangover or impact on the waistline.

Gone are the days of glorified juice boxes and carbonated barley water; there are plenty of alternatives out there now, and e-commerce marketplace Craftzero has them all in one place.

Founded by brothers-in-law Sherif Goubran and Marc Naggar, Craftzero offers an extensive range of non-alcoholic beer, wine and spirits, including a large collection of alcohol-free craft beer such as Athletic Brew Co.

Craftzero’s non-alcoholic beer, wine and spirits. Picture: Wendy Chung Photography

Upside Dawn Golden Ale — made with premium Organic Vienna malt and a blend of English and American hops — Drop Bear New World Lager which is made with lemon, lime and mandarin infused hops, toasted malt and Motueka honey; Nirvana Hoppy Pale Ale, made in the UK with just 30 calories per serve; and the wholly quirky yet oh so palatable, Upflow Fruit Pavlova Pale Ale and Big Drop Galactic Milk Stout, a multi-award winner that tastes like a Violet Crumble.

Non-alcoholic wines are catching up to their near-beer counterparts with reputed wineries making alcohol-free options such as Giesen 0% Marlborough sauvignon blanc — from New Zealand and Henkell Alcohol-Free Sparkling Wine from Germany.

Relatively new to the game is Nine Elms No.18. It’s crafted specifically to be paired with fine food in that it’s not necessarily designed to emulate wine but rather an alternative to pairing with meals. Pretty crafty.

THICC COOKIES & BIGG BROWNIES

Baking was one of the big hits of lockdown last year, and it’s sure to surge up the charts of things to do at home this time around too.

Fortunately for those of us that are allergic to the oven, you can still get your fix of homemade cookies.

The inspiration for Christopher Scheldrik’s cookie creations at THICC Cookies came on a trip to the Big Apple.

“I wanted the thick, rich cookies I had while I was in New York,” he says.

His Hefty New York cookies are crisp on the outside with a soft centre. Heat them up ever so slightly, then break it in half to get at the melted chocolate chips, caramel or loads of Nutella.

The selection is strong enough to knock over any craving, whether you’re after just one cookie, one 1kg cookie, or one box with a selection of both THICC Cookies and BIGG Brownies.

THICC offers next-day delivery to the Greater Sydney area (check website for postcodes) and ships nationwide. Now, if only that order came with one litre of cold milk.

EAST 33

Shucks! That was the first thought many of us would have had when Gladys told us we’re going back into lockdown.

Shucks can also be your second thought if you’re an oyster lover as East 33, a collective of Sydney rock oyster Farmers favoured by Sydney’s fine dining restaurants, have put together packs of premium oysters — shucked or unshucked — with free next-day delivery to Sydney Metro.

You can get two-dozen oysters ($59) on their own, with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut Champagne ($139), or, unique to East 33, an accompaniment from the Chef Series ($84) – four different vinaigrettes created by four award-winning chefs.

For those after more than a couple dozen plump and juicy oysters, East 33 has a nice little gift in store.

“To support everyone in restrictions, East 33 will be including a complimentary chef accompaniment with any orders over $100 during this lockdown,” James Garton, East 33’s executive CEO, says.

So, go ahead. Treat yourself. You certainly deserve it.

OPEN FOR TAKEAWAY

The Taphouse

“We’re all in this together.”

It’s easy enough to say, but few people truly embrace that ethos as much as The Taphouse’s owner, Joshua Thorpe. who, through July 9, is offering free meals to all hospitality workers.

“As we enter this two-week lockdown and period of uncertainty for the unforeseeable future, we wanted to give back to our local community and recognise how invaluable hospo workers are to our industry,” says Thorpe.

“This is our little part, and our way of acknowledging that the only way we will get through these difficult times is together.”

Anyone working in the hospitality sector need only request the “hospo meal” to receive a house-crumbed chicken schnitzel with gravy, chips, and seeded salad, or a vegetarian pasta puttanesca with onion, garlic, chilli, sun-dried tomato, olives, capers, and parmesan, as well as a free shot.

For those within 1km of the Flinders and South Dowling St location, staff will be providing free delivery on food and drinks; otherwise, when you drop in for pick-up orders, head to their bottle shop for 25 per cent off all stock, including over 200 lines of locally produced craft beers and wines. Viet

Cold nights call for warm noodle soups, but if you’re looking for something on the lighter side, Vietnamese pho makes for a great option. And because much of the southeast Asian dishes (not just soups) are based on fresh and seasonal ingredients, it’s also one of the healthiest cuisines going.
