Margot Robbie channelled 90s Cindy Crawford as she led the charge of Aussie exports on the white carpet for the 2023 Met Gala.
The superstar Australian acting export wore a dress originally worn by Crawford, designed by the late Karl Lagerfeld, in 1993.
“They remade it for me and it is a Karl design,” Robbie said on the white carpet at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
“I feel really great in it actually. It is incredible, obviously the Met is always an exciting night but I had the great privilege of getting to know Karl to an extent. I was the last Chanel ambassador that he picked actually so it is an honour. I am thrilled that they are honouring him tonight because he was exceptional.”
The theme of the gala aligns with the exhibition that it opens each year. In 2023, that is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, celebrating the German fashion designer that was best known for his work with Chanel and died in 2019 at the age of 85.
Robbie’s black chiffon dress was embellished with clear plastic and gold metal chains, accessorised with Chanel diamond jewellery.
Robbie meanwhile will soon to be everywhere with her much hyped Barbie flick set for release in July. Ryan Gosling plays Ken alongside Robbie’s Barbie in the movie directed by Greta Gerwig.
“I knew it would be exciting for everyone, I didn’t really realise the kind of energy it would have behind it,” Robbie said of the anticipation building around the film. “We come out July 21st so it is still a little while away, I am amazed everyone is this excited already, we still have so much more to show you.”
Miranda Kerr’s Dior gown was fit for a princess, complete with a sleek Old Hollywood updo and bold wine-stained lip, the picture of Parisian glamour.
Nicole Kidman and music star husband Keith Urban were an early start on the white carpet. She paid tribute to Lagerfeld by wearing a dress she originally wore in the Chanel No5 advertising campaign directed by Baz Luhrmann in 2004.
The dress is made of pink silk tulle with a long train of four meters in circumference, embroidered with 250 pink feathers and over 3000 silver crystals and sequins.
Luhrmann and multiple Oscar winner wife Catherine Martin are close friends with Vogue boss Anna Wintour.
It was a double date of sorts for Kidman and Luhrmann, who arrived together with their respective spouses, star Kidman arrived with star singer husband Keith Urban by her side and Luhrmann with Martin of course.
Luhrmann accessorised his longline Thom Browne suit with a kilt detail in classic Chanel black and white with a Paspaley pearl and diamond brooch. The stunning piece, titled Wild Feather Clasp, comes with a price tag of $52,800 and features keish drop Australian South Sea pearls with 172 white diamonds in white gold.
Martin wore a reworked outfit from Aussie designer Romance Was Born in Chanel style.
Of her dress, Kidman stated: “Karl concocted this out of his head I have the sketches when he was drawing it and then we fitted it. I remember fitting it repeatedly and I think my deep, deep sort of love of Karl came through this time together because I knew him very very well and so to be able to honour him and to wear this dress now for Chanel and show I suppose the way these couture gowns last and the exquisiteness and if you take care of them and love them, they are timeless.”
She continued: “To be able to wear the same thing 20 years later and it still holds … there is whimsy to it and it is so light as a feather and it is unbelievably comfortable but it is all hand made.”
Other Australians to make a mark on the white carpet include actors Hugh Jackman and wife Debora Lee-Furness, model Adut Akech and actor Kodi Smit-McPhee.
Akech was wearing Carolina Herrera.
Margaret Zhang, the Aussie editor in chief of Vogue China, wore black Chloé, the same dress as Olivia Wilde but she was in white.
