Only the $150 million draw was bigger than this one.
Only the $150 million draw was bigger than this one.

This week’s $120 million Powerball draw is the second-biggest prize ever offered by an Australian lottery game.

It’s only surpassed by a $150 million Powerball draw held in September 2019. However, three individuals shared that prize.

Also in 2019, a Sydney nurse became Australia’s current biggest individual lottery winner when she won a phenomenal $107,575,649.08.

Since her 2019 win, the cashed-up woman and her family have bought a new home and made some donations.

She continues to work, but has revealed she’s happy to never have to pick up an iron again.

The mum in her 40s shocked the nation when she declared on the night of the historic draw that she’d be showing up to work the very next day – and she hasn’t given up work since her win in January 2019.

“I don’t know why people were so shocked,” she said recently.

“I’m still working and my husband is also still working. We both love our jobs.”

The down-to-earth mum is still happily cleaning the house and doing the grocery shopping, but confessed there was one chore she didn’t think twice about ditching.

“I’ve never been one for ironing. Now I do have someone who does the ironing for me and that’s been invaluable,” she laughed.

The couple revealed that the prize had made them feel “incredibly privileged” by allowing them to create a legacy that would continue far beyond their lifetimes.

“In those weeks after our win, I walked down the street and I knew that just about every second person bought a ticket into the draw, and I know that I won their $10 or $15 and that really resonated with me. Paying it forward is really important to us because if you change one person’s life, you have the potential to change the whole community,” she said.

“We have already made some really important donations, and we’re always thinking a lot about what we want to support next. We watch the news and we read the papers, and we literally keep a notebook of causes we know we want to help on a grassroots level.”

In 2021, 14 Powerball division one winners across Australia pocketed more than $550.1 million in prize money.

During this time, Powerball offered an $80 million jackpot three times – the biggest prize offered by any Australian lottery game during the year.

Of the 14 Powerball division one winning entries in 2021, seven landed in NSW, four in Queensland, two in Victoria and one in Western Australia.
