‘I love this question!’

This week, a viewer posted in the Adult Bluey Fans Facebook page posing a question around just what language Jean-Luc speaks in France, given he speaks French in the original version.

“Important question!” the post began.

“If you watch Bluey in French, what language does Jean-Luc speak, since he speaks French in the English version?”

Jean-Luc is introduced in the season one episode Camping, where he and Bluey meet on a camping holiday. Though they don’t speak the same language, the two overcome the barrier and become friends.

This is Jean-Luc’s only appearance in the series, however there have been cameos in drawings in future episodes.

Due to the episode and the character both being fan-favourites, the question was met by enthusiasm from commenters, with some wondering why they didn’t ask it themselves.

“I love this question! I’m surprised my 14 year old daughter that is obsessed with Bluey never asked,” one said.

Jean-Luc, or…

Thankfully, some French speakers in the group were able to save the day, confirming that in the French version of the show, Jean-Luc speaks English, and is named Johnny.

“He speaks English with a French accent, because his family is supposed to be from Quebec,” one commenter answered.

Other Aussies stepped in and said they’d investigated this already.

“You know, I actually changed the language to French specifically to watch this episode in order to answer that question,” said one commenter.

One fan also provided a photo from their Bluey book for reference (pictured above).

The character’s name in particular kickstarted conversation in the comments, with Jean-Luc apparently an odd choice.

“The name Jean-luc in France is a name that is not used much anymore, most likely to be found on men over 40yo,” one said.
