“Australia is one crazy place”

The Aussie Facebook page Australian 90s 00s Nostalgia has taken to the platform to expose something they noticed on the MyMacca’s app.

“Australia is one crazy place where it costs $3 now for a slice of cheese,” the post reads.

In the picture shown, a cheeseburger rings in at $5, and the hamburger - with just one less ingredient - costs $2.

“My new bargain fave is…”

Commenters thought the discrepancy was hilarious, with many sharing their own money-saving hacks.

For some, it’s the happy meal.

“$9.50 for a hamburger meal but $6.50 for the same meal, with a toy in a pretty box,” said one commenter.

“It’s funny, the happy meal is cheaper than a small cheeseburger meal,” another agreed.

For others, it was the now-famous McSmart meal.

“Buy a McSmart meal for $6.95 and throw the rest back through the window....that's value!” one person said.

“My new bargain fav is their smart meals,” said another.

“We know the promise of value matters more than ever”

In a statement to Kidspot, Macca’s said they were all about these strategies, encouraging customers to always get the best value possible.

“We love that some adults are choosing the great savings and fun of a Happy Meal!” a McDonald’s Australia spokesperson said.

“Even more are enjoying the unbeatable value of the McSmart Meal. For just $6.95, Aussies can enjoy a Cheeseburger, Small Fries and a Small Soft Drink AND your choice of a second Cheeseburger, a Chicken n Cheese, Sundae or 3pc McNuggets. That’s less than what customers would have paid nearly five years ago, pre-COVID.”

The hamburger in particular is as cheap as it is because it’s on the Loose Change Menu - offering 8 Macca’s favourites for under $4.

“In today’s cost-of-living environment, we know the promise of value matters more than ever to our fans across Australia,” the spokesperson said.

“It’s why our menu features a range of great value offerings and choices for everyone, from individuals to the whole family.”
