'Am I loopy?': My MIL made a bizarre remark about my kid's lunch box

Can you spot what she pointed out? Because many parents have been left scratching their heads...

A mum was in her kitchen preparing lunch for her little ones when her mother-in-law walked in with some unsolicited advice.

Every parent's dream, right!?

She then found herself having to defend her choices, but she later turned to the internet for advice over who was in the right.

The 'unhealthy' lunch

In a post on Reddit's r/parenting subreddit, the mum shared her frustration, writing: "My delightful MIL came around today while I was making the kids some lunch and commented on the fact that their lunches are unhealthy."

She continued: "My kids prefer 'picky picky', as they call it, so that's what I did. Here's what they had today:

- Capsicums

- Carrots

- Celery

- A ton of cucumber

- Half a slice of sourdough toast with peanut butter

- An innocent smoothie (orange, mango, pineapple)

- A small 20g pack of pretzels

- A mini waffle for a treat as they've been great today

She concluded her post by asking: "Am I loopy, or is this healthy? This is really bugging me..."

The response from the community

The mum’s post quickly garnered attention, amassing 637 comments from fellow parents who were eager to weigh in.

Many empathised with her situation and provided advice.

"Did she also ask if they were cold 73 times and suggest a little whiskey to cure a cough? You’re good," quipped one commenter.

"That’s more veggies than my kids get in a day," another user noted, receiving 1.8k likes on their comment. "That’s more veggie than I eat in a year!" another replied.

"Ask her what was so unhealthy about it. Because I see nothing wrong with the meal," one parent advised.

Another chimed in, "If my toddler ate half as well as that, I'd be frickin over the moon."

The consensus among the commenters was clear — the lunch was not only healthy but also diverse and balanced.

One person summed it up perfectly: "That’s pretty healthy. And you know what else is healthy? Your MIL minding her own damn business. You never asked for her opinion. You’re not feeding your kids anything alarming. You could have given them a bowl of ice cream if you wanted to, and she still should have kept her mouth shut."

However, some pointed out that the lunch might be low in protein, which could explain the MIL’s concern.

"It’s low in protein, but most kids' foods other than chicken nuggets are. I could see why she would comment. Older people are generally all about meat and potatoes and being horrible to children," one user commented.
