1. You refuse to ever check your bags

Hold luggage is for the weak! Carry on is for the strong! For a number of years, 'one-bagging' has become quite du jour. You've jumped onboard this trend like a freshly cleaned dog into a big muddy puddle, and it's now a fundamental element of your personality.

2. You refuse to visit 'cliche' travel destinations

'Basic' travel snobs might turn their noses up at taking a selfie with the Eiffel Tower, but high level travel snobs refuse to go to places like Paris altogether. 

3. You sneer at people who stand up as soon as the plane lands

Do you sneer at the fools who stand up as soon as the seatbelt light goes out, even though there's still another 4 minutes and 30 seconds until the flight attendants actually open the doors?

I'm sorry to say: you're a high level travel snob. And the people that stand up probably just want to stretch - it's not necessarily that they, unlike you, don't know how planes work.

4. You refuse to go anywhere in peak season

Even if Ibiza is a party island with awesome vibes in summer and Whistler is a skier's holy place in winter (and so on), you refuse to visit any of them at the best time of year. You know better, and you make sure anyone in earshot knows it.

5. You insist on pronouncing things like a local

"It's not Barcelona, it's Barthelonaaaa..." Yes, you know the type. Bonus points for calling England 'Old Blighty,' Seville "seviyyyyaaaaa" and Paris "pareeeey." And then immediately butchering your next sentence. 

6. You have a wallet with a foreign currency in it

"You don't take Euros here, do you?" According to Escape's Associate Digital Editor, Simone Mitchell, this is a classic 'elite' travel snob move, especially when the foreign currency "conveniently spews out when you're amongst friends ... even though you've been home for two months."

7. You've got no clue about the frequency of buses from your suburb to the city, but you do know the exact time QF1 departs Sydney for London

According to Escape's Content Director Jana Frawley, this is a sure fire way to work out if you are a high level travel snob. 

8. You call the Chamonix region of France "the cham"

ShamWow... If you have cute nicknames for luxurious regions of France, guess what: you're a travel snob. And that's according to Escape's Digital Editor, Rowena Ryan.

9. You tell people you 'always knew' Qantas would put Neil Perry's famous steak sanga back on the menu, after they withdrew it in 2009

Part time snobs may have stuttered in their belief. But you were a true believer. 

10. You think trekking to Everest base camp makes you better than everyone

Unlike your more basic travel snobs, who gush about their travel experiences, and tell their friends they haven't lived, elite travel snobs are more subtle.

A knowing look in their eye, a patronising raising of the eyebrows - they won't give you the opportunity to confront them, but they'll still make sure you know they have accessed mystical realms of self development you'll never get near. 

11. You know the names of the staff in the airport lounge... and you make sure everyone you travel with knows it

"Hi, David - sorry, Dave - I'll have a chicken edamame toasted sandwich please. And make it snappy."

12. You have a specific routine for long haul flights

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous of anyone who has reached this level of oh la la-ery. What does it consist of, exactly?

Think: having a specific meal you order before each kind of flight route, a specific drink you order in each lounge, a specific chum you call in each city, and a specific dose of xanax you imbibe at the start of each business class flight.

13. You once flew to New Caledonia, purely for the points

Worse: your second favourite hobby, after talking about status runs, is talking about the intricacies of credit card reward systems, and how you'll be nabbing a free trip to the Maldives "any day now."

14. You scoff at people who hold up airport security

Never mind the fact that the rules change from country to country (in Australia they might laugh at you for taking your shoes off to go through security, while in America they may be enraged if you don't), never mind the fact that you occasionally get busted yourself with a tub of toothpaste or a slightly too large bottle of hotel shampoo - if someone else makes a mistake it is judgement time. 

15. You think 'travellers are the new tourists'

Basic travel snoots might quibble over the difference between tourists and travellers. But you're playing interdimensional chess. For you it's not about being a tourist or a traveller, it's about living in each place.

For this reason, you prefer to stay in digital nomad hostels and spend your time at a WeWork office, rather than booking Airbnbs and hanging out in Irish pubs. 

16. You complain about Australia's lack of Lidls

Nothing demonstrates how low-key desperate you are to remind people you lived overseas quite like this...

17. You complain about how you used to be able to spend as long as you wanted in Europe, thanks to your British passport, but now Brexit has ruined everything

Cry me a river... and now suck it up and start researching ETIAS waivers like the rest of us.

18. You once drank a Peroni at 10am in Heathrow, before a 25 hour journey home, 'just to feel something'

You're quirky like that, you know. What would the rest of these latte-sipping norms know about real travel?
