Triple Olympian Lisa Curry has revealed she quit alcohol following heart complications, spending the night in hospital.
The 62-year-old gold medallist swimmer issued a health warning to anyone feeling weird feelings in their chest and arms saying, ‘If in doubt get checked out’.
Curry said she spent the night in hospital this week after having the battery changed in her pacemaker.
“Seventeen years ago I was walking with my paramedic friend Linda and I told her I had a really heavy feeling in my chest, like a 20 kilo weight sitting on me,” Curry said.
“To a paramedic, that’s a serious symptom and she promptly took me to the hospital.
“This was five months after paddling in a seven-hour hour race in Hawaii with a virus and the separation from my husband.
“I had myocarditis, 22,000 irregular heartbeats a day, a mitral valve prolapse, hereditary from my mum, a fracture in my sternum from a chiropractic appointment, then a defibrillator, an infection, a month’s stay in hospital on heavy antis and then finally home living a different life.
“I had to give up what I loved most, paddling in the ocean on my own for hours on end. This was a huge life change for me as I loved my ocean time.”
The former golden girl of the pool said she stopped drinking in April last year. She decided to have a cocktail while holidaying in Fiji in only for the sugary drink to set off her implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.
Speaking from hospital, Curry said the pacemaker “has kicked in a couple of times and the defibrillator has given me a shock just once when my HR went up to 270 after drinking a cocktail.
“I decided to have a cocktail on our last night. It was super syrupy and sugary and not 10 minutes later I went off with a bang, which was not a nice feeling.”
