Melbourne will get its chance to ‘shamon’ when the electrifying MJ the Musical comes to Her Majesty’s Theatre from September.
The four-time Tony Award-winning production featuring 25 hits from Michael Jackson, the king of pop, has unearthed a talented line-up of new Australian stars.
Australian Producer, Michael Cassel, said the response from audiences so far to the production in Sydney had surpassed expectations.
“Melbourne audiences are known for their discerning taste for quality and pedigree, and this production delivers on every level: the music, the artistry, the talent, and the spectacle,’’ Cassel said. “We can’t wait to share it with the city.
“The response from Australian audiences has been phenomenal. We are incredibly proud of the entire cast, musicians and crew, whose dedication and talent have truly brought this production to life. Excitingly, we have seen a remarkable number of people travelling specifically to see this production, highlighting its status as event theatre, which makes for a truly extraordinary experience in the theatre.”
Liam Damons, who plays young adult MJ, underwent rigorous training and a boot camp in the US to prepare for the role.
“I did my audition in Melbourne and it’s such an arts city and I know Melbourne will really love it,’’ Damons said.
“Sydney audiences have eaten it up too. It’s incredibly intense but so much fun. My dad brought us up on MJ and all of his DVDs and CDs and the ‘This is it’ documentary. It’s come full circle for me and the perfect introduction to professional theatre.”
Tickets for the Melbourne season will be available for pre-sale from May 26.
