Why viewers keep on watching Selling Houses Australia

There is so much property TV these days. The staying power of a series usually gives you an indication of its popularity so it’s no surprise Selling Houses Australia is currently airing its 12th season, entertainment reporter David Meddows writes.

Andrew Winter on overcoming Bell's Palsy and Gold Logie nomination

There is so much property TV these days — buying, selling, renovating, holiday houses — you name it, there’s a show about it.

The good things is, there seems to be versions produced in every country across the globe so you can get a glimpse of how others live.

You can watch a family restoring a historic house in Sydney or stare jealously at the screen as a British couple look for a holiday house in the south of France. There are even some shows where people with too much money are doing both.

The wishful thinking shows are fun to watch sometimes, but the more relatable ones are more appealing in my opinion — although with housing prices in Sydney still ridiculous (despite the constant news of a plummeting market), even these shows are wishful thinking to many.

I’m a big fan of a good drama series or bingeing on something hilarious like Brooklyn Nine-Nine or Veep, but there’s a Wednesday night ritual in our house and it involves Andrew Winter, Charlie Albone and Shaynna Blaze.

Desperate homeowners contact the show after they’ve been unable to sell their property for an extended period of time.

WHY POH BELIEVES MASTERCHEF DOESN’T NEED THE DRAMA

Barely a minute of the show has aired before you can guess exactly why nobody has handed over their (bank’s) hard-earned cash.

These aren’t usually hovels, they’re mostly just in poor condition or have bad floor plans or windmills in the front yard or holes in a back deck where someone has surely fallen through at a drunken barbecue.

Winter does a walk-through of these places and, as someone with little to no filter, tells the owners exactly what he thinks.

Watching the looks on their faces as he tells them their house is terrible is awkward but you find yourself nodding enthusiastically.

Blaze and Albone then do their thing. Walls are ripped out, kitchens are replaced and clutter is shipped off to some unknown location (hopefully the tip for most).

While the outcome is always amazing, there’s almost no way any normal family could do the same kind of work for the budget these guys have.

But if you do own a home and are always thinking of things to do to it, this is a great source of inspiration.
