The Voice: Kelly Rowland stunned by singing trio’s demands

A GROUP called He Planned Us probably should have mentioned during their blind audition for The Voice that they have one very strict demand.

The Voice: He Planned Us want to sing only gospel songs

KELLY Rowland booted a singing trio off The Voice after they refused to sing anything but gospel songs.

The trio called He Planned Us stunned their coach as they began rehearsals for their performance in the Knockout round.

Rowland told the girls that she’d picked the Diana Ross song Ain’t No Mountain High Enough for them to sing and asked if they were ready to give it a crack.

“Gospel, we only sing gospel. Period.”

They looked at each other nervously before replying, “In a way”.

“In a way?” asked the Destiny’s Child star, “what does that mean?”

“We’re called He Planned Us and it kind of just fits that we sings song about God,” one of the girl’s said in a piece to camera.

“We really, really, really always wanna sing straight gospel and that’s the direction that we feel like we’re called to,” they told Rowland.

And the Voice coach’s reaction was priceless.

Thinking on her feet, Rowland told He Planned Us that the lyrics of Ain’t No Mountain High Enough are “basically God talking to us”.

Basically.

“Just look at the lyrics then let me know how you feel,” she urged them.

The girls agreed and went on to sing the song during the knockout round.

But word of their song demands had clearly spread among the coaches.

“I feel like it was a really great song for you guys,” Delta Goodrem told the trio after their performance.

Subtle Delta.

Having to choose whether to advance the group to the next round or boot them from the comp, Rowland gave He Planned Us an early indication that their gospel only requirement had cost them.

“I will say in this industry you have to be flexible,” she said.

“When we worked together I feel like some things I don’t know if you’re just ready for yet”.

Having to pick her favourite between He Planned Us, Lewis Ciavarella and Gemma Lyon, Kelly Rowland picked the latter and sent the others packing.

After He Planned Us exited the stage, Boy George was blunt in his assessment of the trio, saying, “they are strict gospel singers and they wouldn’t sing certain songs”.

“For me that would be a nightmare. No way.”
