ASK The Real Housewives of Sydney star Matty Samaei how much her face is worth and she’ll tell you straight: it’s priceless.
“No amount of money is too much to spend. You’ve only got one face,” Samaei, dubbed the “Botox queen” on the Arena series, spruiks.
A registered nurse, Matty has built her 20-year career on selling her Double Bay Medispa By Matty clients on the benefits of anti-wrinkle injections, fillers, skin-tightening, peels and more.
As a walking billboard for her business, Samaei is unapologetic about the unreal amount of money — close to $28,000 — she spends on her own appearance.
First there’s microdermabrasion every three months (estimated by plastic surgeon, Dr Jeremy Hunt at $150-$300 per treatment); followed by skin tightening ($1200 each year) and regular Botox into her forehead and frownlines ($2000 per year).
“I have my lips done every two years. I had a nose job when I was younger and I’ve had my boobs done, and a little bit of liposuction from my thighs,” she explains, adding “that’s it ... I haven’t done much.”
In the high-drama series — already defined by its catfights — the mother-of-two came under fire for her “fake” appearance, in an explosive exchange with fellow housewife, Athena X Levendi.
While she can laugh at her own frozen face at times, there was no way Samaei was going quietly when hit with the cosmetic surgery slur.
“She was saying I’m fake because of my level of Botox. I don’t understand that,” the 43-year-old tells Switched ON.
“All I can say to her is: don’t judge a book by its cover or you might miss a good story. I think I look fabulous for my age.”
She’s got a comeback for most criticisms, using humour to deflect any negative attention.
“Some people might say, ‘Oh, her lips are too big.’ Well, my apologies if my big lips bother you but I like them. What do you want me to do, yell out ‘sorry guys, but my lips are coming in first,’ before I walk into every party?”
Jokes aside, Samaei takes pride in her classic migrant success story: with the Iranian-born business woman propelling herself from modest roots to the kind of designer life which drew the attention of the Foxtel series’ producers.
She will admit, however, that her plumped up pout does lead to some misunderstandings.
“It’s really important for people to understand that when I speak and I don’t pronounce certain words it’s not because I have a speech impediment or because of my fillers. It’s my accent.”
Samaei says her smooth-skinned forehead also has an unexpected side-effect on her parenting.
“My kids will say, ‘Mum, why are you yelling?!’ and I say, ‘because I can’t frown.”
Rather than being shamed by her critics, Samaei considers herself “one of the luckiest people on the planet.”
“I love my job, beauty is my passion. When I look at a face and I correct it, I feel proud because it’s my creation. What I do is empowering,” she says.
“Ageing is a natural part of life and it’s everyone’s choice how they handle it. You can be an autumn tree and let your leaves turn yellow. But, if you want to stay green, come and see me.”
