Retired netball great Liz Ellis, Olympic boxing champ Harry Garside and reality star Aesha Scott were the final three celebs left in the jungle heading into Sunday night’s I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! finale.

And in the end, Liz emerged victorious, with Harry placing second and Aesha third.

Earlier in the finale, Liz had told her fellow finalists that she’d entered the jungle just expecting to last a few days on a reality TV show, but had come away with a life changing experience.

There were emotional scenes as each contestant was individually surprised by a loved one - Aesha with her partner, Harry with his father and Liz with her husband and children.

Aesha and Liz both sobbed at the surprises.

“My darlings. ... Oh, my God. Look at you. I‘m so happy you’re here. This is the best day ever,” Ellis said as she embraced her son and daughter.

The finale caps off an at-times dramatic season of I’m A Celeb, which returned to filming in Africa after a three-year absence due to Covid. Arguably this season’s most high-profile contestant, TV legend Kerri-Anne Kennerley, quit just three days into the season after an explosive confrontation with MAFS star Domenica Calarco.

Dr. Chris Brown made a not-so-subtle reference to KAK’s exit during Sunday’s finale, recapping that “14 celebrities went into the jungle this season... and 13 of them pushed themselves to the limit.”

Nick ‘Honey Badger’ Cummins suffered one of the most hard-to-watch mishaps in I’m A Celeb history, when an angry python bit him on the hand during a challenge. Ever the optimist, Cummins later told news.com.au the animal attack had been a “beautiful moment.

And it was also an emotional season for the hosts, with Brown now leaving Ten for rival network Seven. His exit was announced back in February, with this season of I’m A Celeb being his final commitment for Ten.

Brown has copped his fair share of on-air ribbing through the season, and it continued through the finale, with the final trial somehow ending with the co-host getting a pie in the face:

In a candid joint interview with news.com.au last week, both Brown and co-host Julia Morris confessed it was proving hard to say goodbye.

“I’m just sad in my heart,” said Morris.

“I think I’m still in shock, and in a very healthy way, I’ve decided to completely ignore it in my brain.”

Brown said it had been bittersweet having one last season of the show before making the move to a new network.

“It’s definitely been [difficult], and that’s been because I love the show so much. It’s been hard to count down how many shows you have left, and realise it’s the last time you do this or that,” he said.
